Improved Cropping Pattern at BARInd Area, Rajshahi: Challenge for Maintaining Soil Fertility and Productivity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with a view to examine the feasibility of an improved cropping pattern at barind area. Rajshahi against the traditional farmers• cropping pattern . The improved cropping pattern showed its superiority over the farmere' pattern in both of its agronomic and economic point of view. In improved cropping pattern the yields of single HYV aman is more than two local rice i.e.B.aus +T. aman in farmers pattern . Moreover, the addition of green manures increased the organice matter content of soil which is at present below critical level in most of the barind land . Farmers were also benefited by cultivating pulses during winter season which at the one hand met up their nutritional deficiencies in their daily diet and help to improve the soil condition on the other. Through improved cropping pattern farmers were benefited in terms of gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio.

Objectives:

To examine the feasibility of an improved cropping pattern over the existing farmer's cropping pattern.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Farming Systems Research (FSR) site of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Rajshahi during kharif 1988-89 to rabi 1989-90. In both seasons the improved cropping pattern were tested and compared against the farmer's pattern with five replications under rainfed situation. Two plots of 500 to 1000 square metres were selected for each replication. One plot was under the improved pattern and the other was under farmer 's existing pattern. Broadcast aus was grown in farmers field in Kharif-1 season while in the experimental plots the dhaincha (Sesba-nia aculeara) was grown during this season. This was ploughed down in the field after 50 days of sowing in Kharif- 11 (June-August) season for green manuring. After 15 days the seedling of HYV T. aman rice (BR 14} were transplanted with local T. aman seedlings after harvesting of B. aus. In rabi season far mers kept their land fallow while chic- kpea were sown in the experimental plots with linseed as mixed crop. In experimental plots dhaicha seed was sown at the rate of 40 kg per hectare in both the seasons ( Kharif 1988-89 and 1989-90). Thirty days old seed lings of BR 14 rice was transplanted with 3•4 seedlings per hill in 20 x 15 em specing in bo th the seasons. In farmers pattern 35 days old seedlings were transplanted in their fields. No fertilizes were used in dhaincha while 40-60-40 kgs of N-P2 06 and K:O from urea. TSP and MP were used per hec tare respectively for cultivating the BR14 rice.
