Effect of Green Manuring with Sesbania Rostrata in Presence of Urea-n on Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August to December, 1992. Four T. aman cultivars (two modern and two local), namely, BA11, BA22, Kalizira and Nizershail were used under four nitrogen treatments (viz. N0, N25%, N50%, N100%). Seventy days old Sesbania rostrata at the rate of 105 tha·1 was incorporated in the experimental field before 35 days of transplanting rice seedlings. The yield and yield contributing characters of rice varied significantly due to the different varieties. The variety BA11 produced the highest yield and Kalizira, the lowest.

Objectives:

To find the effect of green manuring in presence of different doses of urea nitrogen on the performance of different cultivars of transplant aman rice.

Methodology:

Two modern varieties BR 11 and BR 22 and two local varieties Kalizira and Nizershail were used as experimental crops. Four nitrogen levels 0, 25, 50 and 100 percent (i.e. N0, N25%, N50% and N100%) for local varieties) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications where variety was placed in the main plot and nitrogen level in the sub plot. The size of each unit plot was 4m x 2.5m. The number of treatments were 16 and total plots were 64.Sesbania rostrata was grown and incorporated at 70 days of sowing in the experimental field on 6 July 1992, 35 days before transplanting rice seedlings. The rate of incorporated green biomass of Sesbania rostrata was 150 t/ha. Recommended fertilizer doses were used for modern varieties. In case of the local varieties, the fertilizer doses were the half of the modern varieties. All the fertilizers except urea were applied before last ploughing at final land preparation. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits at 10, 36 and 65 days of transplanting . Forty day old seedlings were transplanted on 10 August 1992, maintaining 25 cm x 15 cm spacings with three seedlings per hill. Weeding was done twice and Diazinon 100EC at the rate of 1.2 t/ha was applied once to control insect during the growth period. The varieties Kalizira and BR 11 were harvested on 29 November and Nizershail and BR 22 on 16 December 1992. Ten hills from each plot was selected randomly to study the growth parameters. The grain and straw yields were recorded on whole plot basis. The collected data were analyzed statistically and significance of the mean differences were adjudged by Dauncan's New Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

The chemical N-fertilizer had no significant effect on rice yield after incorporation of Sesbania rostrata.
