Breeding Soundness Evaluation of Bulls Used for Artificial Insemination N Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 12 Artificial Insemination ( Al ) bulls reared in Central Cattle Breeding Station ( CCBS ) Savar, Dhaka and Al Centre Mymensingh were examined for breeding soundness. The general and sexual health of the bulls were found to be satisfactory. The mean scrotal circumference was 37 ± 1.62 cm. The semen characteristics in different month of the year revealed significant difference in volume of ejaculates, sperm concentration/mm², mass activity and motility among the bulls. The semen volume, sperm concentration, mass activity and motility of the sperm of different bulls in a year ranged from 4.85 to 6.92ml. 819.17 to 1234.12 mill/mm² , 2.71 to 3.68, "+" and 57.17 to 67.49% respectively. As regards mass activity no significant difference was observed in types and age groups of the bulls.

Objectives:

The present study was designed to evaluate the semen characteristics of bulls used for Al practice in Bangladesh with special emphasis on the effect of months of the year, age and breed of the bulls.

Methodology:

A total of 12 bulls, reared in Central ' Cattle Breeding Station (CCBS) Savar, and Al centre Mymensingh were included for this study. The bulls were of 4 Sahiwal ( SI ) , 3 Friesian ( F ), and 5 crossbred. The crosses were Sahiwal x Friesian {Sl x F}, Local x Holstein Friesian ( L x HF ) x Local x Friesian (L x F), Sahiwal x Sahiwal-Kenya ( SlxSl- K ). Sindhi x Friesian (SxF) x Local x Friesian (L x F). Local x Sahiwal x Friesian (LxSl x F) origin. The age of the animals ranged from 2 to 7 years. They were maintained under stall feeding and fed approximately 10.0 kg roughages, 2 kg concentrates and allowed to have exercise for 1 hour daily. The general clinical examination of bulls was done prior to breeding soundness examination Special clinical examinations on sexual behaviour with respect to libido, penis erection, mounting and grasping of the dumy seeking movement, protrusion of penis and ejaculatory thrust were done. The scrotum was inspected with respect to size. shape and freedom from any skin disease. The scrotal circumference was then measured. Two ejaculates from each bull were collected once in a week by means of standard Artificial Vagina (AV). The semen examination consisted of volume. colour, density, mass activity, motility of the spermatoz.oa, sperm concentration, pH and catalase value . The volume of the ejaculate was recorded by reading graduation marks on the semen receptacle.

Achievement/Findings:

There was a significant variation in semen volume and sperm motility and highly significant variation in sperm concentration among different types of bulls. However, the mass activity was statistically similar in all types of bulls. The volume of semen (6.5ml) and sperm motility (65.5%) were highest in Zebu x Taurine bulls and the sperm concentration (1108.7 mill / mm²) and mass activity (3.4)," +" were highest in breeds under tropical conditions. The significant (P <0.01) differences in volum of ejaculates, concentration of spermatozoa, mass activity and motility among different breeds of bulls. This could be due to inherent quality of breed type as well as management and environmental effects on bulls of the present study
