Effect of Nitrogen on Growth and Yield of Summer Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture( BINA), Mymensingh during the period from March to May, 2002 in Kharif season to find out the effects of four nitrogen levels viz., without urea (control), full dose of at sowing (25 kg urea/ha), full dose of urea at two splits and urea at three splits on growth and yield of summer mungbean. The varieties viz., Binamoog-1, BARI mung-2 and Binamoog-5 were used. Total dry matter, leaf area index and chlorophyll content of leaves were increased significantly due to the application of various nitrogen treatments over the control. The above parameters were the highest when the crop were treated with full dose of urea at 3 splits and were the lowest by the control. Plant height, number of branches/plant, number of pods/plant, 1000-seed weight, seed and straw yield were increased by the application of different N treatments compared to that of the control. The highest seed yield (2.98 g /plant) was obtained from urea application at 3 splits while the lowest yield (2.43g /plant) achieved with the control. Nitrogen produced negative effect on harvest index. Harvest index was decreased at higher nitrogen level.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to evaluate growth and yield of summer mungbean under different nitrogen levels and to find out proper method of nitrogen application for optimum growth and yield.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from March to May, 2002 in Kharif season to find out the effects of four nitrogen levels viz., without urea (control), full dose of at sowing (25 kg urea/ha), full dose of urea at two splits and urea at three splits on growth and yield of summer mungbean. The varieties viz., Binamoog-1, BARI mung-2 and Binamoog-5 were used. Each pot contained 6 of soil collected from BINA farm. Seeds were sown 11 March 2002. The plants were harvested at 40, 50 days after sowing and maturity. Data on morphological, yield and yield attributes were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Freed, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
