Aerobic and Anaerobic Transformation of Nitrogen During Incubation of Soils with Added Trace Elements

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Madhupur tract soils (Noadda series) were incubated at 30⁰C and at moisture levels of 50% and 133% maximum water holding capacity (mwhc with 50 ppm each of Fe, Cu, Zn B,Co and Mo to study ammonification (NH 4-N ) and nitrification (N0₃ -N) after 3, 6 and 12 weeks. During aerobic incubation ammonification and nitrification were significantly stimulated by Fe, Cu. Zn and Mo. Boron decreased nitrification at all periods of incubation, whilst Co had little or no effect on nitrification up to 6 weeks but decreased it after 12 weeks. Anaerobically, all the added elements greatly increased nitrification at all periods of incubation. Fe and Co consistently increased ammonified nitrogen which was not much affected by Cu. Under anaerobic condition the disappearance of ammonified nitrogen in case of B, Co and Mo was reflected in the concomitant higher accumulation of nitrified nitrogen indicating their possible implication in nitrification.

Objectives:

To study the effects of Fe, Cu, Zn, B, Co and Mo on ammonification and nitrification in Madhupur red soil under both aerobic and anaerobic condition.

Methodology:

The soil samples used for the study were collected from Madhupur where rice plants are currently being grown. The soil samples were stored in polyethene bags after being air-dried and ground to pass a 22 mesh sieve in Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. All the mineral elements used were added (50 ppm) in the forms of their finely ground reagent grade. Fe, Cu, Zn were added as sulphates, Mo as molybdic acid, B as sodium tetraborate and Co as cobalt oxide. The mechanical analysis of the soil was performed by using the standard Pipette and Sieving method. The soil contained 49.94% sand (0.05 mm), 20.10 silt (0.002205mm), 29.96% clay (0.002 mm), 0.127% total N, 1.513% total organic C, 0.055% total P and had a pH 5.6 in water. The original soil was found to contain 31 ppm Fe,1.1ppm Cu, 5.2 ppm B, 1.0ppm Co and 0.25 ppm Mo. The concentration of the mineral element s in the soil was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (SFUNICUM 90). The incubation technique of Ekpete and Cornfield (1961) was followed. Portions (10 g) of the soil were set up in 4"x1" diameter glass tubes with sufficient replications to allow for analyses in duplicate initially and after each incubation period (3, 6 and 12 weeks) with added 50 ppm metallic elements in aerobic (50% mwhc) and an aerobic (133% mwhc) soils. The barium peroxide method (Cornfield, 1961 ) was used for aeratoin and absorption of C0₂ during incubation (30⁰C) of the tubes which were closed with rubber bungs. After each incubation period calculated amounts of water were added to the tubes so as to make the total moisture contents 10 ml. The pH values were determined after shaking.

Achievement/Findings:

From this study it is almost clear that the Modhupur red soil might be generally different in certain essential mineral elements. Replenishing the soil with these elements could overcome this deficiency. The suitable amounts and kinds of mineral elements to be added in the field soil for the better growth and yield of rice necessitate a further study.
