Genetic Variability and Correlation Studies in Some Watermelon Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ten cultivars of watermelon were evaluated as to genetic variability and correlation pattern. Highly significant differences were observed among the cultivars for all the characters. The cv. Shinkanro and Charleston Gray were the earliest and latest in fruit maturity respectively. Maximum fruit yield and highest brix was obtained in cv. Ashahi Yamato. Genotypic co-efficient of variation was the highest for number of seeds per fruit followed by number of node at which first female flower arises and moderate for fruit yield per plant. Heritability value was the highest for days to maturity followed by yield per plant. Maximum genetic advance was obtained from number of seeds per fruit followed by number of node at which first female flower arises and fruit yield per plant. Correlation studies indicated that individual fruit weight and number of fruits per plant had the highest positive correlation with fruit yield per plant.

Objectives:

To assess genetic variability and interrelationships of different characters in watermelon.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted using ten cultivars of watermelon namely, Top Yield, Charleston Gray, Shinmikasa, Glory, Gualonda, Potenga, Shinkanro, Sugarbaby, Ashahi Yamato and Yamato Cream. The cultivars were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.5m x 10m having rows 2. 5m apart and plants 2.0m apart in the rows. Seeds were sown in December, 1988 in the wooden boxes. Seven days old seedlings were transferred to individual polyethylene pots and finally transplanted in the field in February, 1989. Manures and fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. Irrigation and other cultural operations were done as and when required. Data were collected from five plants of each replication on number of primary branches per plant, days to opening of first female flower, node number at which the first female flower arises, days to fruit maturity from sowing, fruit length and diameter, number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, rind thickness,number of seeds per fruit and brix percent. Genotypic and phenotypic co-efficients of variation were calculated. Heritability in the broad sense was estimated and genetic advance in percentage of mean was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Fruit yield had a positive significant correlation with individual fruit weight and number of fruits per plant. Fruit yield was negatively correlated with days to opening of first flower. There was a negative significant correlation between number of primary branches and number of fruits per plant. Similarly, individual fruit weight had a negative significant correlation with length of fruit.
