Growth, Yield and Leaf Water Attributes of Some Advanced Mutant Lentil Lines Under Different Soil Moisture Regimes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four selected advanced mutant lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) lines Ml-30, Ml-596 along with the local parent, L-112, were evaluated for water stress tolerance in the glass house. The lines Ml-30, Ml-52 and Ml563 had more filled pods, yield per plant and harvest indices (HI) under stress than L-112. Ml-596 had the highest biomass production among lines, but its partitioning ability of assimilates towards pod development was very poor and it produced the lowest yield in all the treatments. The water parameters data showed that the lines Ml-30 and Ml-596 combined high T^o (time taken to reach the point of stomatal closure of leaf) and low RWC^o (relative water content of leaves at the point of stomatal closure) values in the water stress treatments.

Objectives:

The objectives were to evaluate lentil mutants under different soil moisture levels and to find out stress tolerant mutant.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted under glass house conditions with four selected mutant lines along with their parent, L-112. The plants were grown under three soil moisture regimes (60, 40 and 20% FC) in rabi season (winter) 1991. Each treatment was replicated four times. Each pot contained 4 kg BINA farm soil. Water was added to the pots 2 to 3 times per week using a weighing balance. The relative leaf water content (RWC) of fresh leaves and the transpiration decline curves of the excised saturated leaves in the following days were determined at flowering stage by weighing the leaf at frequent intervals. During weighing, when the leaves became flaccid and wilting symptoms the leaves became flaccid and wilting symptoms appeared, measurements were continued to obtain several points so that a regression curve could be established. From that curve, the data on the T^o (time taken to reach the point of stomatal closure of leaf) and RWC^o (relative water content of leaves at the point of stomatal closure) were traced. At maturity, the plants were harvested. The total dry matter and yield component data were then recorded. The data were analyzed statistically using two-factorial design and LSD tests were followed to evaluate the mean data. Coefficients of variation were also calculated to determine the precision of the experiment.
