Effect of Water Stress on Morpho-physiological Character and Yield of Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during aman season from August to November, 2005 to assess the effect of moisture stress on growth and yield of ten rice genotypes. The ten genotypes Included in this study were TNDB-100, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan28, Binadhan-4, RD-2586, MR-150/10, MR-150/ll, Ukunimadhu, RM-100/24, RM-100/18. The soil Moisture levels were 100% (control), 70 and 40% field capacity (FC). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. All the yield and yield contributing characters were the highest in l00% FC and lowest in 40% FC. The highest number leaves, leaf area, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight, root dry weight, total dry matter, panicle weight, number of panicle and grain yield were Found in RM l00/18. The highest number of leaf, leaf dry weight, root dry weight, stem dry weight, panicle weight, total dry matter, number of panicle and grain yield were found in the treatment combination of RM l00/18 with 100% FC. The highest plant height and total chlorophyll was found in the treatment combination of MR-150/11 with 100% FC.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effects of different soil moisture levels on grain growth and yield of rice genotypes and to find out stress tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during aman season from August to November, 2005 to assess the effect of moisture stress on growth and yield of ten rice genotypes. The ten genotypes Included in this study were TNDB-100, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan28, Binadhan-4, RD-2586, MR-150/10, MR-150/ll, Ukunimadhu, RM-100/24, RM-100/18. The soil Moisture levels were 100% (control), 70 and 40% field capacity (FC). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Rice was grown in plastic pots. Each pot contained 9 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH 6.7. Three seedlings of 30-day old were transplanted in each pot on August 10, 2005. The seedlings were thinned to single plant per pot at 2 weeks after transplanting. Soils were fertilized with urea 1.05 g, TSP 0.87 g and MP 0.42 g per pot corresponding to urea 170 kg, TSP 135 kg and MP 65 kg per hectare, respectively. The pot experiment was arranged in 2 factors randomized complete block design with 3 replicated pots. Amount of water to be added to maintain the desired water level was measured by weighing the pots at alternate days. The rice plants were harvested at 60 DAS and at maturity for measurement of morpho-physiological attributes and. The data were analyzed statistically following two factor experimental design of RCBD by MSTAT computer packages (Freed, 1992).

Achievement/Findings:

All the yield and yield contributing characters of rice genotypes were the highest in 100% FC and lowest in 40% FC. The highest number leaves, leaf area, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight, root dry weight, total dry matter, panicle weight, number of panicle and grain yield were Found in RM l00/18. The highest number of leaf, leaf dry weight, root dry weight, stem dry weight, panicle weight, total dry matter, number of panicle and grain yield were found in the treatment combination of RM l00/18 with 100% FC. The highest plant height and total chlorophyll was found in the treatment combination of MR-150/11 with 100% FC.
