Effect of Green Manuring on Yield and Physicochemical Parameters of Br 11

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of green manuring with or without nitrogen application on the yield performances and physicochemical characters of BR 11 rice was studied. Two varieties of dhaincha. Sesbania eculeata and Sesbania rostrata were used for green manuring purpose. Various treatments that include green manuring with or without two levels of nitrogen were applied. A common dose of P, K, S, and Zn were applied in all the experimental plots. Highest grain yield was obtained with treatment that includes S . rostrata+ N₈₀ which is statistcally signifcant. On the other hand, the treatment of S. rostrata without nitrogen fertilization gave the lowest grain yield and did not have any stimulating effect on the total straw yield. The higher number of fertile tillers were obtained by the application of S. aculeata +N₈₀ and S. rostrata+N ₈₀ which are statistically significant at 5% level. The protein conetnt ranged from 7.23 to 9.04%, being highest at the treatment of S .aculeata with N₈₀. In contrast, the amylose content was increased when fertilizer was applied in combination with S. aculeata . A negative correlation co-efficient value of -o.057 was observed between grain yield and L / B ratio, whereas a positive correlation value of 0.598 was observed between grain yield and protein contents of the grain. The protein content of rice grain was found to be negatively correlated with starch ( -0.864 ) and the amylose content ( -0.427 ),

Objectives:

The present study was. therefore, undertaken with a view to compare the effect of dhaincha (S. aculeata and S. rostrata) plant with or without N fertilizers on the growth, yield and physical and chemical characteristics of BR 11 rice grown in the same field and also to determine a suitable combination of green manure and N fertilizers for HYV BR 11 rice variety

Methodology:

The fieId work was conducted in the tillering and at panicle initiation stages Agronomy field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from April to November, 1988. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 7 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were S . aculeata +O kg N /ha, S. rostrata + o kg N / ha, S. aculeata +80 kg N/ha, S. rostrata + 80 kg N/ha, No dhaincha + 80 kg N/ha,S. aculeata + 40 kg N/ha, and S. rostrata. Biochemical analysis of rice samples were performed in the research laboratory, Department of Biochemistry, BAU., Mymensingh. The rice grain was dehulled and finally ground in a grinding machine and stored in a desiccator for chemical analysis. The procedures for the estimation of moisture, ash and starch content were those of AOAC. The amylose content was determined.

Achievement/Findings:

It is evident that the highest amylopecrin ( 59.37 ) was obtained at treatment S. aculeata + N₄₀ and the lowest (54.18) at treatment S. aculeata +N₈₀ . The results indicate that amylopectin content in rice increased when nitrogenous fertilizer was used along with green manuring irrespective of dose of nitrogen used.
