Effect of Salinity on Morpho-physiological Characters and Yield of Summer Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from 7 February to l5 April 2006 to observe the response of salinity (control, 4 and 6 dSm^-1) on growth and yield of ten mungbean genotypes viz., N₄J-207, N₁J-210, E₁J-608, E₅M-5ll, N₅J-521, N₂M-402, E₁J-603, Binamoog-7, Binamoog-5 and BARImoog-5. All morpho-physiological characters such as plant height, number of branches, plant^-1, number of leaves plant^-1, leaf area plant^-1, dry matter production in roots, stems, leaves, pod dry weight and total dry matter, yield contributing characters such as number of 'pods plant^-1, number of seed plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield plant-1 and harvest index decreased with the increase of salinity levels as compared to those of the control. Plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, pod dry weight, number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds plant^-1, seed yield plant^-l and total dry matter were the highest in N₄J-207 compared to other genotypes.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to observe the effect of salinity stress on morpho-physiological attributes and yield of mungbean genotypes and to identify relative salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from 7 February to l5 April 2006. The plants were allowed to grow under three salinity levels viz., control (0.22 dSm^-1), 4 and 6 dSm^-1). The experiment comprised of ten mungbean viz., N₄J-207, N₁J-210, E₁J-608, E₅M-5ll, N₅J-521, N₂M-402, E₁J-603, Binamoog-7, Binamoog-5 and BARImoog-5. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at the rate of 0.09, 0.16 and 0.16 g in each pot of 8 kg soils to maintain the dose of 18, 30 and 36 kg/ha of N, P and K, respectively. Salinity treatments were imposed at 45 days after sowing (DAS) by adding different amount of salts (NaCl 50%, NaS0₄ l5%, NaHC0₃ l0%, CaCl₂ l0%, MgCl₂ l0%, MgS0₄ 5%) (Burman et al., 2002). Amount of salt calculation for salinity development was done according to Michael (1978) and Ponnamperuma (1984). Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded to 55 DAS and at maturity. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program. Duncan’s Multiple Range Text (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant height, number of branches, plant^-1, number of leaves plant^-1, leaf area plant^-1, dry matter production in roots, stems, leaves, pod dry weight and total dry matter, number of 'pods plant^-1, number of seed plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield plant-1 and harvest index of mungbean genotypes decreased with the increase of salinity levels as compared to those of the control. Plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, pod dry weight, number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds plant^-1, seed yield plant^-l and total dry matter were the highest in N₄J-207 compared to other genotypes.
