Modification in Veneer Grafting Technique for Quality Fruit and Timber Production in Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A high degree of success in veneer grafting ranging from 85% to 100% was obtained during the period from mid-April to August in Mymensingh region of Bangladesh in 1990 and 1991, The stock internodes of 1,5 to 6 months' old and the 'scion' of 1 to 2 months' old, depending upon the growth phases at different times of the years, showed successful graft union. Microscopic observation showed that stock and scion tissues with least possible wood form effective graft union quicker than those with thicker woods in the stem. Thus veneer grafting on medium-soft, medium-hard and hard-wood stem showed that grafting between younger partners is more effective, having an average of 98.3% success than that of hard-wood stem of normal practice. Based on this information, grafting of young primary branches with different types of scions could be done with 86.0% success on the top of 2-year-old mango 'sapling, having straight stem of at least 2.0m long, with a view to obtain both quality fruits and straight timber from the same plant.

Objectives:

To modifying the procedure of veneer grafting to obtain both quality fruit and timber together from the same plant.

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out during February to September, 1990 and May to August, 1991 at Agroforestry Germplasm Centre, Departmnent of Crop Botany, Banqladesh AgricuituraI University, Mymensingh. Stones from a single mango tree of a local type were procured and sown in the month of June, 1989 and 1990. Seedlings were grown in rows of 0.5 m apart in three blocks of 7m x 3m each. Grafting operations were started from mid-Februarv of 1990 and done in the middle (14th-16th) of each month on 3- 6 months' old internodes (stem in between flushes) of 7-15 months' old stock plants. The scions from similar aged plants, with developing buds at tips just before opening as well as with developing new shoots, at the inter- node ages of 1-2 months were used. Contact grafting was done using internodes of similar size between 1.5 to 8 months' old internodes. The internodes of the stock and scion having diameters of approximately 8-10 mm were grafted. However, in the present study longer incisions of approximately 50 mm and wrapping of veneer graft union with polythene wrapper were practiced. The success percentage was calculated after 1.5 months from the date of grafting when the scion stick had fully sprouted. Callus growth and cellular union at the graft union were studied following separation of the stock and scion by physical force and hand sections for microscopic observation wherever applicable.

Achievement/Findings:

On the basis of the present study it may be, concluded that the younger stem should be used for effective graft formation to overcome the problems of graft failure. Although the hard-wood stem sometimes show quick graft intake due to the presence of thick cortical layers, it may not be as effective as that of younger stem in the long run. The results of the present study clearly indicate that veneer grafting of mango should be practiced on internodes of 1.5 to 3 months' old for the formation of effective graft union. The remnants of the stock internode above graft union might be disappeared in these stems more quicker than those of older ones.
