The effect of feeding dried cow-dung on growth and nutrient utilization was studied with 9 growing bull calves (initial LW 84.5 kg) in a 75 day experiment. The animals were divided into three groups having three animals in each group. The control group A was offered a conventional concentrate mixture containing rice bran, sesame oil cake, bone meal and common salt and 25 and 40 per cent of the rice bran of the concentrate mixture were replaced by dried cow-dung in groups B and C respectively. Rice straw and road-side qrass were given ad libitum as basal feed in all groups. Towards the end of the experiment a digestibility trial was conducted. Average daily live weight gain was 217, 206 and 182 g for animals fed diets A, B and C respectively. Daily dry matter consumption in groups A, B and C were 3.33, 3.14 and 3.03 kg per 100 kg live weight respectively. The live weight gain and dry matter intake decreased linearly (P<0.05) with the inclusion of increased proportion of cow-dung in the diet. The apparent digestibility of DM, CP, EE, CF and NFE differed significantly (P<0.05) among the dietary groups. The per cent TDN content for diets A, Band C were 53.9, 50.77 and 48.44 respectively and the difference was significant (P < 0.(5). The results suggest that dried cow-dung could be used to replace 40 per cent rice bran of the concentrate mixture in bull calf ration without any harmful effect.

To study the effects of feeding dried cow-dung on growth and nutrient utilization in bull calves.

Nine growing bull calves (local non-descriptive, LW 84-85 kg) were randomly divided into 3 groups having 3 animals in each. The ingredient and chemical composition of experimental diets fed to different groups of animals. The control diet A (16.58 percent CP) was conventional concentrate 'mixture containing rice bran, sesame oil cake, bone meal and common salt. In diets Band C, dried cow-dung was incorporated in the ccncentrate mixture to replace 25 and 40 per cent rice bran of diet A respectively. This represented that cow-dung replaced 0, 16.64 and 26.13 percent CP of the concentrate mixture in diets A, Band C respectively. Fresh dung of bullock fed on a roughage based ration was collected from the Animal Nutrition Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. This was dried in the sun and ground in a Wiley mill and then incorporated in the concentrate mixture. All the diets were offered @ 3.5 kg OM per 100 kg live weight of the animals. Concentrate mixture was given separately @ 10 g per kg live weight in the morning and roughage fraction of the diet was then made available ad libitum to all the dietary groups for the rest of day. The amount of reed offered was adjusted at fortnight intervals based on the highest live weight of the calves in various groups. Clean water was provided at all the time. Rice straw and green road-side grasses were chopped into small pieces before being offered to the animals. Diets were supplied to the animal twice daily, morning at 7:30 a.m. and afternoon at 4:00 p.m. and the refusal was weighed before morning feeding. All the animals were reared under same managemental conditions. The animals were weighed initially on two consecutive days and then reweighed at fortnight intervals to calculate growth rates. At the end of the feeding experiment, a 8 day digestion trial was conducted with all the animals fed diets A, Band C. Feed and faeces samples were analysed for proximate composition.
