Effect of Different Irrigation Levels on Growth, Yield and Yield Contributing Characters in Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during February to April of 2002 to investigate the effect of irrigation on growth and yield of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek). Two advanced lines, E₄I-901 and N₂M-402 and a summer mungbean variety Binamoog-5 were grown. There were three irrigation levels i.e., (i) no irrigation (control), (ii) one inigation at 25 days after sowing (DAS) and (iii) 2 irrigation at 25 and 35 DAS. Results revealed that significantly higher seedy yield was obtained from the irrigated plants over the non-irrigated ones. Higher number of pods plant^-1 and greater amount of assimilate towards the seed contributed to higher seedy yield in the plants irrigated twice at 25 and 35 DAS. The lowest seed yield was obtained from each genotype under control. Binamoog-5 showed its superiority in 100-seed weight (3.13 g), biological yield plot^-1(1.0 kg) and seed yield plant^-1 (9.66 g) under the treatments. The mutant E₄I-901 ranked next and N₂M-402 showed the lowest seed yield plant^-1biological yield plant^-1.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of different irrigation levels on mungbean genotypes and to find out the effective number of supplemental irrigation suitable for optimum growth and yield.

Methodology:

A study was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during February to April of 2002. Two advanced lines, E₄I-901 and N₂M-402 and a summer mungbean variety Binamoog-5 were grown. There were three irrigation levels i.e., (i) no irrigation (control), (ii) one irrigation at 25 days after sowing (DAS) and (iii) 2 irrigation at 25 and 35 DAS. The soil was silt loam, organic carbon 1.25%, organic matter 2.16%, total N 0.11%, available P 36.5 ppm and available sulphur 18.10 and soil pH 7.1. Urea, TSP and MP at the rate of 25, 70 and 35 kg/ha respectively, were incorporated to the soil during land preparation. Seeds were sown on 14 February 2002. The morphological, physiological and yield attributes were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experimental design of RCBD by MSTAT computer packages (Freed 1992). The mean differences among the treatments were calculated with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
