Correlation and Path Analysis in Brassica Campestris L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six cultivars/lines of Brassica campestris L. were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. Both genotypic and phenotypic correlation and path analysis were done for twelve related characters. The study of interrelationship among different characters revealed that the most important character, seed yield/plant showed high genotypic and phenotypic correlation with number of secondary branches/plant, number of siliqua/plant and 1000-seed weight. Except these, seed yield/plant also showed only high genotypic correlation with siliqua bearing area and high phenotypic correlation with primary branches/plant. Path analysis showed positive direct effects of number of secondary branches, siliqua/olant and 1000-seed weight on seed yield/plant.

Objectives:

To get some information on association among seed yield and some of its related characters and-direct and indirect effects of these characters on seed yield using correlation coefficient and path coefficient analysis.

Methodology:

The investigation was carried out in the field laboratory of Genetics and Plant Breeding Department, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period November 1986 to February 1987. Six cultuvars/ lines of B. campestris L. Viz., Sampad, BAU/M-91, TS-72, Torch, BAU/M-44 and Tori-7 were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding the reciprocals. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were twenty one entries consisted of six parents and fifteen F₁s. Each plot contained three rows each of 2m in length. Spacing was 30 cm between rows and seeds were sown continuously in rows with 4-5 cm spacing. Weeding and irrigation were done after 19 and 20 DAS respectively. Average of data were recorded from ten competitive plants taken randomly for each replication and were used for statistical analysis. Data recorded on twelve related characters viz., days to flowering, plant height at maturity, siliquae bearing area, number of primary branches/plant, number of secondary branches/plant, number of siliqua/plant, number of sterile siliqua/plant, siliquae density (number of siliqua within 10 cm area from the base of bearing area), siliquae length, number of seeds/siliquae, 1 ODD-seed weight and grain yield/plant. Correlation coefficient and path coefficient analysis were done according to the methods used by Singh and Chaudhary (1979).

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that selection for characters siliquae bearing area, number of secondary branches/plant, number of siliqual plant and 1000-seed weight may help in increasing yield. Path analysis further indicated that more emphasis should be given on number of secondary/plant, number of siliqua/plant and 1000-seed - weight.
