Effects of Fertilizer on the Abundance of Plankton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The abundance of plankton were varied among the treatments and the highest abundance was recorded in the treatment 3. A total of fifteen genera of phytoplankton were identified of which Aphanocapsa, Anabaena and Nostoc were significantly varied from the abundance of rest of the genera. The abundance of 12 genera of phytoplankton and group of zooplankton was highly significant whereas the production of Nauplius was significantly higher and varied from the rest of the genera of zooplankton. No significant difference was recorded among the abundance of Filinia, Asplanchna and Diaptomus. The linear correlation of all genera of phytoplankton and zooplankton were analysed where almost all the significant correlation values were positive in nature. The intercorrelations in 15 genera of phytoplankton were analyzed through path coefficient analysis where all the signif icant correlation values were positive in nature.

Objectives:

1. To supplement a thorough knowledge about the qualitative and quantitative study of plankton with respect to use of fertilizers .

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for a period of 6 months in 10 rectangular artific ial fish ponds with inlet and outlet each having 10 decimals of Fisheries Research Institute, Mymensingh. The ponds were numbered 1,2,3, -------- 10 respectively starting from North to South direction to facilitate the identification of each pond. Rainfall and supply of water by deep-tubewell were the main source of water supply in all the ponds. Three different doses of urea and triple superphosphate were used twice a month in 9 ponds and pond no 10 was kept control. First, second and third doses were composed of 1 kg urea plus 1 kg T.S.P. and second dose was composed of 3 kg urea plus 3 kg T.S.P. and third dose was composed of 6 kg urea plus 6 kg T.S .P. and were applied in pond no. 1-3, 4-6 and 7-9 respectively. For a good representative of plankton samples,30 litres of water were collected from the surface of the pond and passed through plankton net to bolting silk number fifty five and concentrated to 30 ml and preserved in 4% formalin. The plankton samples were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The numerical estimation was done by Sedgew ick Rafter counting chamber. The qualitative analysis of both phytoplankton and zooplanktion was done. Data was analyzed by completely randomized design and randomized block design through Microstate package programme by Epson Micro Computer.
