Effect of Salinity Stress on Morpho-physiological Parameters and Yield Attributes in Lentil Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from 1 November 2003 to 15 February 2004, to assess the effect of salinity on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of lentil genotypes. The plants were allowed to grow under three salinity levels (control, 4 and 6 dSm^-1). The three genotypes of lentil, a variety (Binamasur-1) and two lines (LM-30-3 and LM-30-5) were used. Plant height, number of primary and secondary branches, number of leaves, leaf area, total dry matter, seedy yield, 1000-seed weight and harvest index (HI) were gradually reduced with increasing level of salinity as compared to control. However, Na⁺ and K⁺ content in leaves increased with increasing salinity level. Plant height, root, stem and leaf dry weight, TDM per plant, pod weight, 1000-seed eight, seed yield were the highest in the line LM-30-3 compared to those in the line LM-30-5 and Binamasur-1. Primary branches, secondary branches, number of leaves,leaf area, number of pods and harvest index were the highest in BARI masur-1. Among the genotypes, line LM-30-3 was the best, Binamasur-1 was moderate and the line LM-30-5 was the least one for salt tolerance.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to observe the effect of salinity stress on growth and yield of lentil genotypes and to identify relative salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from 1 November 2003 to 15 February 2004. The plants were allowed to grow under three salinity levels viz., control (0.09 dSm^-1), 4 and 6 dSm^-1). The three Genotypes of lentil, a variety (Binamasur-1) and two lines (LM-30-3 and LM-30-5) were used. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Urea, TSP, MP and gypsum were applied at the rate of 0.12, 0.52, 0.21 and 0.03 g in each pot of 7 kg soils to maintain the dose of 30, 74, 30 and 5 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. Salinity treatments were imposed at 56 days after sowing (DAS) by adding different amount of salts (NaCl 50%, NaS0₄ l5%, NaHC0₃ l0%, CaCl₂ l0%, MgCl₂ l0%, MgS0₄ 5%) (Burman et al., 2002). Amount of salt calculation for salinity development was done according to Michael (1978) and Ponnamperuma (1984). Data on morpho-physiological and yield attributes were recorded to 60 DAS and at maturity. Na⁺and K⁺contents in leaves of the harvested plants were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program. Duncan’s Multiple Range Text (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.

Achievement/Findings:
