Effects of Density and Moisture Content on Strength Parameters of Ryton Sand

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of moisture content and density on strength parameter of Ryton sand 'was studied. Triaxial test was performed on Ryton sand at different moisture contents and dry desities. A considerable variation in the values of its strength parameters c and was observed. Values of both the parameters were found to increase with the increase in dry density while decrease with the increase in moisture content.

Objectives:

To determine the Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters c and Ø at different densities and moisture contents of soil and the effect of initial dry density and moisture content on such soil strength parameters.

Methodology:

Soil : Ryton sand is a reasonably well graded sandy soil with low clay content. The main particle size classifications of this toil are: sand 94.23%, silt4.21% and clay 1.56%. The liquid limit of this soil as determined according to B. S.1377 ( 1975 ) is 30%. Soil preparation : The soil particles passing through 2mm sieve were used for this investigation. Initially soils were allowed to dry in an oven for 24 hours at constant temperature 55° C. Distilled water was sdded to obtain the required level of moisture content. The mixture was then sealed in a poly thane bag and then thoroughly remolded by hand and was left overnight to equilibrates before use. The moisture levels were selected to provide a reasonable number of observations. - Tests were performed at different den sites at the same moisture conter.t. Average moisture content of a sample was determined by the oven dry method taking a few different small samples from the bag.
