Inter-varietal Hybridization of Mango (set-ii)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A hybridization program was conducted in the flowering seasons of 2014 at RHRS, Chapai Nawabganj. In this program, one commercial mango variety namely Langra and two exotic mango germplasm namely Mixed special and SOM-1048 were used. For hybridization Crossing was carried out between two parents in a full-diallel fashionwas used. Among the selected panicles, 597 flowers were emasculated and pollinated. Total number of fruit retention at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 and 110 days after pollination were 233, 143, 91, 58, 46, 27, 24, 17, 11, 10, and 10 respectively. Ten hybrid fruits from the cross Mixed special x SOM-1048 was harvested at mature stage, and the stones were sown in nursery bed for germination. After germination, these one year hybrid seedlings will be transplanted in the main field after khasi and will be evaluated in the following seasons.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RHRS, Chapai Nawabganj during February to June, 2014. The existing mango germplasm of RHRS were used as parental combinations of crosses. The cross combinations with specific objectives were as follows:

Crossing was carried out between two parents in a full-diallel fashion. For crossing, prospective panicles which contained hermaphrodite and male flowers were selected from the mother parent as well as the pollen parents and were bagged with perforated polythene bags to avoid unwanted pollen contamination. All opened flowers were removed before bagging. Dehiscence takes place after the flowers have opened. Following morning i.e. on the day of emasculation the bags of mother parent were opened and all other unopened buds were removed and emasculation of male parts from the hermaphrodite flowers keeping at least 9-10 female flowers in each panicle was done with the help of fine pointed forceps to avoid any injury to the stigma. Then after the operations, the emasculated flowers were again covered with polythene bags having enough perforations. Again, male flowers from pollen parents were collected and kept in a Petridis. When the anthers have turned purple in the Petridis, hand pollination was done between the selected parents in the morning from 8:00 to 11: 00 a.m. by rubbing the anther on the stigmatic surface. Between each of different combination of parents, twelve crosses were performed. After pollination, the pollinated flowers were again covered with perforated polythene bags because of free movement of air. The bags should be retained for at least a day. The crossed flowers were marked with a tag and tagging was continued up to the harvesting of fruit.
