Economics of Milk Production in the Bathan Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was carried out to find out the distribution of bathan land, herd size, costs and return of milk production and constraints related to milk production in the two bathan areas- Pabna and Serajgonj districts of Bangladesh. A multistage random sampling was drawn taking one thana from each bathan area. A total of 30 bathans were investigated by two sets of questionnaires. The study period covered from mid- November 1991 to mid-May 1992. The results showed that the large herd sizes cover large numbers of owners and large size of bathan land. but the land area per cattle was found highest in the medium herd sizes. In all herd sizes, cows comprised about 50 per cent and bull calf and heifers were around 50 per cent. The oxen and bullocks were shown only 1 to 2 per cent. The return over variable costs per day per cow were Taka 13.33, Taka 9.03 and Taka 0.32 respectively for small, medium and large herd sizes. The net returns per day per cow were Taka 8.07 and Taka 4.65 respectively for small and medium herd size and the net loss was estimated at Taka 3.14 in case of large herd sizes. The cost of milk per litre in small, medium and large herd sizes amounted to Taka 8.70 Taka 9.22 and Taka 12.73 respectively. The rank of the major cost items related to importance of milk production were concentrate feeds, green grass and labour cost. The major problems of milk production in the bathan areas were the rain and thunder storm, scorching sunshine and low prices of milk. The study also suggested that if the cattle could be sheltered in sheds and support price of milk be ensured, milk production in the bathan areas would be profitable enterprise.

Objectives:

To investigate the techno- economics of milk production in those bathan areas.

Methodology:

The Bathan area constitutes six Thanas of Pabna and Serajgonj district. A multistage random sampling was followed for this study. Out of two bathan districts, one thana from each district was randomly selected. These were Bera from Pabna and Shahjadpur from Serajgonj district. From each Thana, 15 bathans were randomly selected taking 5 from each category of herd size namely small herd size (0-150 animals), medium herd size (151- 300 animals) and large herd size (above 300 animals). Thus, a total of 30 bathans were investigated of which 10 from small herd sizes, 10 from medium herd sizes and 10 from large herd sizes. Moreover, the Individual milk animals were investigated to work out the cost of milk production. Two sets of questionnaire were used to record data from the respondents. One set was used to collect the background data of the bathan and the information on the marketing of milk and management of bathanas. The other set was used to collect data on individual feedings, breeding, care and management including milking of animal. The survey was conducted from mid-November 1991 to mid-May 1992 when the people came into the bathan with their cattleherds. After collecting Data, necessary statistical analyses were done to suit the need of the objectives set.

Achievement/Findings:

The economics of milk production in the bathan areas of Bangladesh shows better performance from the viewpoint of cost of milk production. The cost of milk production is lower than any other areas of the country. The small herd sizes of the bathan showed better performance than the medium herd sizes. But the large herd sizes of the bathan incur losses in milk production due to low milk yield in the large herd sizes. The owners of all the bathans faced severe problems due to rain and thunder storm, scorching sunshine and low price of milk in the bathan areas.
