Efficiency of Urea Supergranules Over Other Forms of Urea in Respect of Yield and Quality of Boro Rice Under Sri

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Central Farm, Mymensingh during boro season of 2010 (January-May). There were fifteen treatment combinations consisting of three forms of urea viz., urea supergranule (USG), granular urea (GU) and prilled urea (PU) with five levels viz. 0, 200, 220, 250 and 270 kg urea ha^-1. The basal recommendation doses of other fertilizer applied into the soil were TSP @ 120 kg ha^-1, MoP @ 100 kg ha^-1, gypsum @ 60 kg ha^-1 and zinc sulphate @ 5 kg ha^-1. Application of different forms and doses of urea had significant effect on plant height, effective tillers hill^-1, filled grains panicle^-1, grain and straw yield, starch and protein content of rice except 1000-grain weight. The highest grain yield of 5.833 t ha^-1 and straw yield of 8.08 t ha^-1 were found in 270 kg urea ha^-1 as USG and the lowest grain yield of 2.83 t ha^-1 and straw yield of 5.45 t ha^-1 were found in control. USG @ 270kg ha^-1 performed the maximum starch content (70.53%) and protein content (7.202%) when the control showed the lowest starch (59.65%) and protein (5.042%) content. The result suggests that urea supergranule @ 270 kg ha^-1 is suitable for better growth, quality and high yield of boro rice under SRI.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficiency of urea supergranule over other forms of urea in respect of yield and quality of boro rice cv. BRRI dhan29 under system of rice intensification (SRI),

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications where plot size was 2.5 × 2 m². BRRI dhan29 was used as the test crop. The healthy seedlings of 14 day old were transplanted in the experimental plots on 11 January 2010. Plant spacing was maintained 2.5 cm × 2 cm and three seedlings were transplanted hill^-1. Healthy and vigorous seeds were collected from Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur. Germination test was performed in the laboratory before sowing in the field. Different intercultural operations were accomplished as and when necessary for better growth and development of the plant. The crop was harvested at full maturity on 25th May, 2010. Before harvesting the crops 10 plant sample were collected separately, and then tagged properly for studying the Physical parameters and also starch and protein content. Protein content was computed by multiplying N content in rice grain by a conventional factor of 5.85 (Jackson, 1973). Starch content of grain was computed by multiplying the glucose content by a conventional factor of 0.9. The glucose was determined by Fehling’s method with the use of alkaline solution of copper salts. The formulae were used viz. Protein content = % N × 5.85 and % Starch = % glucose × 0.9. Data were analyzed and treatment means were adjusted by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

The yield, yield attributes and starch and protein content of boro rice cv. BRRI dhan29 more or less significantly varied with the slow releasing form of urea at increasing rate. Urea supergranule (USG) @ 270 kg ha^-1 showed the best performance among the treatments irrespective of grain and straw yield, yield contributing charecters, starch and protein content.
