Zinc Distribution Among Soil Fractions as Influenced by Zinc and Phosphorus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The distribution of applied zinc in v.arious soil fractions of Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm soil were in the decreasing order of crystalline iron oxide > amorphous iron oxide > manganese oxide > organically bound and > exchangeable. Both zinc and phosphorus significantly influenced the distribution of zinc in different soil fractions except crystalline iron oxide fraction. Phosphorus reduced soil zinc concentration in exchangeable,' organically-bound and manganese oxide fractions but increased in amorphous and crystalline iron oxide fractions. Added zinc increased the accumulation of zinc in all the fractions except crystalline iron oxide fraction.

Objectives:

1. To quantify var ious fractions of soil zinc and their contribution to the pool o.f available Zn in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm (BAUF) soil using wheat as a test crop.

Methodology:

A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the distribution of Zn among different soil fractions as affected by P and Zn application. Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm soils (0-15cm) were collected for the study and wheat cv. Kanchan was used as test crop. Earthen pots (area 314 sq.cm) lined with polythene bags were filled with equivalent to 5 kg air dry soil. The treatment consisted of three soils viz. soil 1 (pH 6.2, EDTA extractable Zn 1.11 ppm, organic carbon 0.776% and Olsen P 31 ppm), soil 2 (pH 5.6, EDTA extractable Zn 0.25ppm, organic carbon 0.546 % and Olsen P 35 ppm) and soil 3 (pH 5.7, EDTA extractable Zn 0.48 ppm, organic carbon 0 .948 % and Olsen P 33 ppm); three levels of Zn viz. Zn0, Zn1 and Zn2 (0, 10 and 20 kg Zn/ha as ZnS0₄) and three levels of P viz. P0, P1 and P2 (0, 50 and 100 kg P/ha as triple super phosphate) . Factorial design with three replications was adopted in the study.A basal nutrient mixture (1.2 g/pot) containing N, K, S, Mn, Cu and Mo @ 100 kg N/ha as urea, 25 kg K/ha as muriate of potash, 20 kg S/ha as gypsum, 10 kg Mn/ha as MnS0₄, 5 kg Cu/ha as CuS0₄, 2 Kg Mo/ha assodium molybdate were applied. All the nutrients were thoroughly mixedwith the soil of the individual pot and 50 g soil from each pot was sampled for laboratory analyses. Twelve wheat seeds were sown in each pot and only six plants were allowed to grow at full maturity. After harvest, 100 g soil from each pot was sampled, air dried and seived to 2mm with a stainless steel seive. Fractionation of soil Zn was carried out. The amount of zinc in soil extract was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer with standard prepared by the same reagent as used to extract zinc from the soil. The data were analysed and mean differences were adjudged by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction effect of zinc and phosphorus on the distribution of zinc in different soil fractions were insignificant except organically-bound and manganese oxide fractions.
