Varition of Scab (elsinoe Fawcettii) Incidence in Different Age Groups of Citrus (citrus Limon) Plants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in germplasm centre of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP) and Coconut Orchard at Horticulture Farm. Department of Horticulture. and Laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during the period from February 2006 to July 2006. The incidence of citrus scab was high (96.96%) in July 2006 when the climate was hot and very humid and it was low (9.09%) in March 2006. The highest scab infected leaves (13.2%) and leaf area diseased (7.3%) were observed in 3 years old plants and less infection was recorded in '/4 year and I year old plants. The highest scab infected fruits (43.9%) and fruit area diseased (2.7%) were recorded in 3 years old plants in July.

Objectives:

To monitor the variation of scab incidence in different age groups of citrus plants.

Methodology:

The present study was conducted at the germplasm centre of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP) and coconut orchard at Horticulture Farm, Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from February 2006 to July 2006. Plants of different age groups viz. 1/4 year, 1 year, 3 years, 8 years and 20 years of citrus orchards were considered to find out the incidence and severity of scab of citrus. The diseased leaves and fruits having typical symptoms were collected. The diseased sample was washed in running tap water for few minutes and then cut into small pieces (1-1.5cm). Then, the small pieces were placed on moist chamber and incubated at room temperature for 2 days. Identification of " Elsinoe fawcettii" was done by following Bitancourt and Jenkins and Compendium of Citrus Diseases. Data were collected on % plant infection, % leaf infection, % leaf area diseased, % fruit infection and % fruit area diseased.

Achievement/Findings:

This plants might be harbored the inocula of Elsinoe fawcettii and increased the infection of leaves. In case of leaf area diseased, 3 years old plants produced the maximum level of leaf area diseased (7.3%) and the infection became severe in July (wet summer). The leaf area diseased (%) was found to be increased with the onset of rainy season. Citrus scab on fruit was most abundantly found in 3 years old plants. This disease caused drop of fruitlets. The fruits which were enclosed by the leaves were severely attacked by the disease. Fruit infection (%) from June 26, 2006 to July 10,2006, was high (2.33 to 43.9%) in 3 years old plants when hot and high humid weather prevailed.
