Estimating Milk Production and Use of Draught Animals by the Farmers of Kotwali and Trishal Thanas of Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out to estimate the use of cattle both for milk production and draught power by the farmers of Kotwali and Trishal Thanas of Mymensingh. Farmers having no cows, no oxen, no bullocks and no calves constituted respectively 60.93, 90.11, 78.30 and 64.58% in Kotwali and 52.90, 86.69, 72.35 and 72.56% in Trishal. For use in agricultural operations cows constituted 81.86 to 91.43%, oxen 67.69 to 76.52% and bullocks 100%. Per cow daily average quantity of milk varied from 1.21 to 0.71 litres in Kotwali and from 0.98 to 0.72 litres in Trishal. Estimates observed were indicative of National- Parameters of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

Aims at showing the estimation of the level of use of cattle among the farmers of Kotwali and Trishal Thanas of Mymensingh.

Methodology:

Two thanas of Mymensingh district namely Kotwali (excluding municipal area) and Trishal were chosen for the study. Sixteen out of 130 villages from Kotwali and 8 out of 73 villages from Trishal were randomly chosen. For the purpose of the study a household and a farmer's family were synonymous. In order to sample domes- tic animals the farmer was used as the sampling unit. Lists of farmers (including the landless who have only the homestead) of the selected villages were collected from union councils and the farmers of the selected villages except a few were included in the sample for the collection of data. For some big villages a part of village was taken into consideration. Thus, for the study the sampling design was cluster sampling with farmer as element and village or part of village as cluster. The two thanas were treated as two strata. Since villages were of unequal sizes, the sampling design was a stratified single cluster sampling with unequal sizes. In all, 2498 farmers in Kotwali thana and 1465 farmers in Trishal thana were surveyed for the study. Since farmer constituted the sampling unit the information on family, and livestock were collected in farmer based proforma. The field work started in the month of March 1979 and continued upto March 1980. The study was completed in four rounds throughout the year. The basic data were summarised on village basis.

Achievement/Findings:

Animal are the principal source of draught power in the country. Poor number of animal possessed by the farmers as has been evident from this study indicates serious shortage of draught power. This is in agreement with the national expression given below. "This low level of availability of draught power and animal protein is due to almost doubling of human population, reduced availability of feeds and fodder and traditional negligence of the sector during the past 30 years. If this situation is allowed to continue, the program for doubling of food crop production is bound to suffer seriously for shortage of draught animal power and malnutrition will continue to pass a serious threat to the vast vulnerable group of the human population. Livestock development, therefore, deserves a high priority not only for production of livestock products but also for production of crops
