Association of Some Quantitative Characters in the Segregating (f2) Generation of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The association of quantitative characters such as heading time, plant height and number of effective tillers per plant was studied in the F₂ generation of the cross IR-262A X Dharial. Heading time showed highly significant negative simple correlation with plant height and number of effective tillers per plant and significant and insignificant negative partial correlation with plant height and number of effective tillers per plant respectively. Plant height showed highly significant positive simple and partial correlation with number of effective tillers per plant. Heading time showed highly significant positive multiple correlation with plant height and number of effective tillers per plant and plant height showed highly significant positive multiple correlation with number of effective tillers per plant. Non-feasibility of a directional selection for beading time and plant height and feasibility of a directional selection for plant height and number of tillers per plant are suggested. The weak association between beading time and number of tillers per plant suggests a compromise between the characters at selection,

Objectives:

To study the simple, partial and multiple correlation from a segregating (F2) generation of a cross in rice.

Methodology:

The F₂population from the cross (IR-262A x Dharial) was grown in the field under normal fertility condition during the AUS season of April, 1973. IR- 262A was originally a selection developed from a cross Peta-S X Taichung Native-I and selfed for 6 generations and Dharial is a local standard variety. A dry method of cultivation was followed and the seeds were broad casted in 4 lines contained in each of 6 plot of size 15' X 5'. Normal cultural practices were followed and ultimately 20 plants per row were maintained giving spacing of 12" x 9*. The observation on the three characters (1) heading time (2) plant height (3) and number of effective tillers per plant of the F₂ population were recorded on plant basis. A random sample of 5 plants from each plot were taken for the study and this gave a total of 30 plants out of 480 plants of the experiment. Partial and multiple correlation coefficients were calculated using the simple correlation coefficients.
