The rice grasshopper.Oxya sp. ( Or­ thoptera : Acrididae ) is an important rice pests throughout the rice growing countries in Asia. In Bangladesh, it has already been recognized as an important pest cf rice of major status ( Alam. 1983; BRRI, 1985 ). Grasshopper damages at all stages of rice plant growth. Adults and nymphs feed on rice leaves from the margins of leaf blades, creating cutout areas, thereby decreasing leaf areas and finally affecting the total yield. The present research work was under taken with different types of fertilizers and fertilizer combinations to determine the effect of different fertilizers on the abundance of this pest in BR 11 rice variety. The experimental results of these trials will be helpful in taking appropriate control measures against this insect pest.

To determine the effect of different fertilizer on the abundance of this pest in BR 11 rice variety.

Four different field experiments on BR 11 rice variety with three different fertilizers and ten different combinations were conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Agricultural Univer­ sity, Mymensingh during the aman sea­ son under normal agronomic practices. The unit plot size was 4.0m x 2.5m. There were four different treatments for zinc (Zn 0 , Zn5, Zn 10 and Zn20) and silicon (Si0 , Si10• Si,0 and Si60). six for nitrogen (N0 , N60, N100 Nuo• N200 and N250) and ten for fertilizer combinations (N, NP, NK, NZn, NFym, NS, NPKK, NSZn, NPKSZn and Control) and all of them were replicated thrice in randomized block design. In case of combinations, Nitrogen (N). Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulphur (S}, zinc (Zn) and Farmyard manure (Fym) were used in a single dose i. e. N =88.0 Kg/ ha, P=68.0 Kg/ha, K=36.0 Kg/ha  Zn =5.0 Kg I ha, S =30.5 Kg/ha andFym=14.5   ton/ha.   Sampling  of grass­ hopper  was  done  with  the  help   of  a sweeping  net   having   a diameter of 30 em.   Ten sweeps  were made on the top and  basal  portion   of the  rice plants by walking  diagonally  across the field.  The sweeps  were   randomly  taken  at  two different  dates. first   one at 35  days after transplantation (35 DAT)  and the second at  50   days  after      transplantation OAT).  The collected  insects were counted  properly   and  data   of two  different days  were  mixed.   Statistical    analysis was   carried  out   using F-test and Dun­ can's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Analysis of variance related to grass­ hopper population revealed that in case of zinc. lowest insignificant grasshopper population was observed in highest dose ( 20 kg/ha ), whereas the highest population was observed in lowest rate of (Znr) treatment due variable doses of different fertilizer elements & combination  . In case of silicon a remarkable. but statistically insignificant effect on grasshopper population was observed, where lowest population was in Si60 dose . A reverse effect was observed in case of nitrogen. With the increase of nitrogen dose, the pest population showed an increasing trend . Lowest population was observed in N0 dose. In case of fertilizer combination  highest significant pest population was observed in Nitrogen and Zinc (NZn)combination (15.67) and plot treated with Nitrogen and Sulfur (NS) showed the lowest grasshopper population ( 5.16 ) followed by NPK combination (5.17). It is evident from the experimental results that there were no significant effects of different fertilizer doses but fertilizer combinations produced signifi­cant effects on the abundance of grasshopper. NS combinations showed the highest effect on grasshopper population, therefore, they may be used for lowering the incidence of rice grasshopper in rice field.
