Recharge and Depletion Characteristics of Muktagacha Aquifer, Mymensingh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Recharge and depletion are the two key factors for governing the dynamics of a groundwater basin which were quantified for Muktagacha aquifer from the view point of water table fluctuation. The aquifer got recharged rapidly during the onset of rainy season while the rate of recharge decreased gradually "at the latter part of the rainy season due to lack of storage space though there was sufficient recharge opportunity during the period. The depletion rate was low at the beginning of the dry season and then increased rapidly as the irrigation wells started pumping large quantities of groundwater. It was observed that the months of February, March and April were critical in the hydrologic year due to the highest water demand from the lowest quantity of groundwater storage in the aquifer.

Objectives:

To determine the recharge and depletion characteristics of the local aquifer in order to assist in proper planning of groundwater resources for its optimum utilization in the area.

Methodology:

Data collection: This study was conducted at the Muktagacha Thana during July, 1986 to June, 1990 under Mymensingh district. The various sources of recharge to and discharge from the aquifer were identified. Eighteen representative wells over the study area were monitored and data on static water level were collected at every 15-day intervals. Two observation wells, one deep (50 meter) and one shallow (15 meter) were installed near the Banar river; the only perennial river flowing through the study area. These wells were used to monitor weekly static groundwater level. Geologic samples were also collected during installation of observation wells to investigate lithologic formation. Daily rainfall and evaporation data were collected from installations under this study and also from the local office of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB). Data Analysis: The static water level data were analysed using graphical as well as analytical procedures. the real features of groundwater system of the study area. The recharge and depletion rates of the aquifers were calculated for the months of the year at three locations of the study area. The effect of rainfall. evaporation and extraction of groundwater by irrigation wells on static water level were graphically explained. The interrelationship between river flow and ground water reservoir was also graphically established.

Achievement/Findings:

This study thus leads to conclude that the recharge and depletion characteristics of an aquifer reflect the various hydrologic factors governing the dynamics of the aquifer. This aquifer dynamics provides information about the availability of groundwater resource at various months of the year. This also helps in selecting appropriate well technology to be used in the aquifer.
