Larval Ano Cocoon Characters of Silkworm Bombyx Mori L.fed on Different Mulberry Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Feeding effects of mulberry varieties tested on Silkworm had significant effect on different larval and cocoon characters. The larval length, breadth and weight as well as cocoon weight, shell weight and pupal weight of both sexes recorded on Chinese variety were identical with Var-5, Local and Mysore. but different from Greek-S 1. Var-8, Var-C7 7 6 and Var-3 .

Objectives:

To investigate the feeding effects of eight mulberry varieties on the growth and cocoon characteristics of Silkworm.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Sericulture Research Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Eight mulberry varieties namely. Chinese, Local, Mysore. Var-3. Var- 5, Var-8, Var- C ₇₇₈ and Greek- Si and the Silkworm race, SY-010 were used in this study. The Silkworm rearing was carried out in a wooden tray of 0 .3 m length, 0.3 m breadth and 0.15 m depth. Fifty larvae were always maintained in each tray. Leaves of eight mulberry varieties were harvested and separately fed to the larvae during the whole feeding period. To maintain uniformity, food was offered at the rate of 3g, 7g, 12g, 18g and 25g to the first, second, third, fourth and fifth instars respectively with four feedings a day at equal interval of six hours. Each treatment was replicated thrice. Before spinning, ten fifth instar larvae were randomly selected from each replication of each treatment at the same day and their length, breadth and weight were recorded. Immediately after spinning. cocoons were sexed and the weights of cocoon, pupa and shell were also recorded from 10 individuals of each replication of each treatment. The data were analyzed by Completely Randomized Design ( CRD ) and mean values were compared by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT)

Achievement/Findings:

Better rearing performances of Silk worm were observed on the Chinese variety . It was also revealed that Chinese variety were statistically identical with Var-5, Local and Mysore, but significantly different from Greek-S 1, Var-8, Var-C ₇₇₆ and Var-3 in all the parameters studied. The better rearing performances of the Silkworm on Chinese, Var-5 , Local and Mysore might be due to the fact that these four varieties constitute better nutritive elements in comparison to other four varieties. performances on Var- 5, Local, Var-8 and Mysore. The findings of the present study were in agreement with this study except that the Silkworm race SY-010 showed better rearing on Chinese instead of Var-8. This differences might be due to the seasonal variation of the nutritive value of the variety. However, the seasonal variation of the nutritive value of mulberry varieties used in this study yet to be determined.
