Effect of Potassium on Irrigated Wheat on Piedmont Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The culms of K deficient wheat are thin and weak. Potassium deficient wheat,therefore, can not respond well to N application and is more susceptible to frost. drought and diseases . Foster (1979) reported improvements in the growth of wheat due to addition of potash. Hence, it is imperative to find out the most economic and sound K fertilizer practices to attain desirable wheat production. On the other hand, as because the technologies developed by the researchers have not been widely verified nor validated under far mer's condition, the farmers are hesitant to adopt those technologies. In view of this an attempt was made to identify the needs of potash fertilizer for wheat under irrigated condition at the farmer's field on piedmont soils.

Objectives:

To identify the needs of potash fertilizer for wheat under irrigated condition at the farmer's field on piedmont soils.

Methodology:

The On-farm study was conducted at the farming systems research ( FSR ) periods from December 1985 to March 1986. Four treatments of potash name ly,0,50. 100 and 150 kg K 20/ha through muriate of potash was replicated thrice in a randomized block design. Along with muriate of potash, the crop was fertilized with 160, 100 and 10 Kg N, P2 01& S per hectare through urea, triple super phosphate and gypsum, respectively. Full dose of P105, K 10, S and one third of N was applied as basal. Remaining N was top dressed in two equal splits at 26 and 45 days after sow ing. Wheat cv. Barkat seeds @ 180 kg/ ha was sown continuously in 25 em apart lines on December 2, 1985 and was harvested at maturity after 95 days of sowing. Irrigation and intercultural ope rations were done as and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Incremental addition of potash fertilizers produced significant variation in grain and straw yields of wheat.also reported results. Application of 150 kgK 10/ha produced significantly highest grain (2.90 t/ha) and straw ( 5.09 t/ha) yields which decreased at the lower doses. This may be due to the acidity of the soil which usually need more potassium fertilizer than neutral to alka line soils, because acid soils have developed in areas of high rainfall that leaches out available potassium . The trend of response of spikes/m'and 1000 -grain weight was exactly similar like grain and straw yields . Significantly longer spikes ( 10.99 em ) and the highest number of filled grains/spike (47) was obtained with 100 kg K₂0/ha but was at with those produced at 50 kgK₂10/ha and was significantly superior to the control.
