Bio-chemical Constituents and Storage Behaviour of Some Important Varieties of Potato Grown in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six potato varieties were studied for their biochemical constituents and storage behaviour under ordinary storage conditions. For biochemical constituents moisture, dry matter, protein, vitamin C and total ash, and for storage behaviour dormancy period, extent of rottening, weight loss and final weight of edible tubers were studied. In respect of biochemical constituents there were great variation in vitamin C content only. On the other hand, there were differences in all the characters studied on storage behaviour except the period of dormancy. Although the variety Kronia gave the highest yield Cardinal may get preference in selection if the biochemical composition and storage behaviour is considered.

Objectives:

To investigate the biochemical constituents and storage of six potato varieties that are commercially grown in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Five varieties namely Cardinal, Kronia, Mirka, Patrones originated from the Netherlands and one from India namely, Kufri Sindhuri were obtained from Bangladesh Potato Research Centre, Joydebpur, Dhaka. These were grown at the Horticulture Farm of BAU, Mymensingh and storage behaviour was studied there while chemical composition were determined in the Department of Bio-chemistry during the period from November, 1979 to November, 1980. After harvesting the crop, only fresh samples were used for the study. To investigate the biochemical constituents, moisture, dry matter, protein, vitamin C and total ash contents were determind. The methods utilized for the estimation of moisture, dry matter and total ash were those of A.O.A.C (1965), while vitamin C and protein were determined by Indophenol-Xylene extraction method and Kjeldahl method , respectively. For storage behaviour, dormancy period, extent of rottening weight loss, and final weight of edible tubers were recorded. Healthy fresh tubers were cured for fifteen days at room temperature and stored in wooden crates, each containing 23.33 kg. The crates were kept on the floor in a well-ventilated room. Observation on dormancy period and extent of rottening were made weekly, and the rotted tubers were separated each time. Extent of rottening, and weight loss and final weight of edible tubers were estimated at the end of storage period of eight months starting from 18th March to 18th November, 1980.
