Effect of Salinity at Different Growth Stages of Transplanted Aman Rice Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during August to November 2004 to assess the effects of salinity on rice mutants viz., Y-1281, RD-21M and THDB. Salinity of 6 dS/m was applied at booting and grain filling stages. No salt was added in control plants. Salinity decreased plant height, number of tillers hill^-1, number of leaves hill^-1, leaves and stem dry weight hill^-1, root dry weight hill^-1, panicles dry weight hill^-1, number of panicles hill^-1, length of panicle, filled grains panicle^-1, 1000-grain weight, total dry matter hill^-1, grain yield hill^-1, harvest index in all mutants. Unfilled grains panicle^-1 increased with salinity. Among the mutants, THDB produced maximum number of tillers hill^-1, number of leaves hill-1, leaves and stem dry weight hill^-1, root dry weight hill^-1, panicles dry weight hill^-1, number of panicles hill^-1, length of panicle, 1000-grain weight, total dry matter hill^-1 and grain yield hill^-l under the salinity treatment. Mutant Y-1281 showed the highest plant height. The maximum amount of total chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b and chlorophyll-a/b were found in mutant THDB and minimum in mutant Y-1281. Mutant Y-1281 showed high sensitivity, while mutant RD-21M appeared intermediate level of tolerance to salinity.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effects of salinity stress on aman rice genotypes and to find out salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out three rice mutants viz., Y-1281, RD-2lM and THDB at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during aman season, August to November 2004. The mutants were grown in the same salinity level of 6 dS/m and applied it at booting and grain filling stages. No salt was added in control plants. Each pot contained 9 kg soil was fertilized with 40 g cowdung, 1.13 g urea, 1.11 g TSP, 0.62 g MP corresponding to the rate of cowdung 15 ton ha^-1, 170 kg urea, 135 kg TSP and 65 kg MP ha^-1. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Salts (NaCl 50%, NaS0₄ l5%, NaHC0₃ l0%, CaCl₂ l0%, MgCl₂ l0%, MgS0₄ 5%) (Burman et al., 2002) of 112.67 g were applied to 9 pots at booting and grain filling stage separately to develop 6 dS/m soil salinity following Michael (1978) and Ponnamperuma (1984). Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded and analyzed using the MSTAT-C statistical program.
