Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Application of nitrogen at the rate of 15 to 20 kg/ha to the main crop at 15 days before harvesting produced significantly higher grain yield of the successive ratoon crop. The optimum harvesting time of the main crop was at its physiological maturity for better performance of ratoon crop. Yield of ratoon crop increased with the increase in cutting height of the main crop, the optimum being ranged from 15 to 20 cm above the ground level.

Objectives:

To optimize the cutting height and harvesting date of the main crop, N rate and time of application in addition to normal main crop fertilization, on the performance of successive ratoon crop.

Methodology:

:The experiment was conducted ar BRRI Regional Station, Habiganj in the 1987 Boro season using BR17. Sixty-40-40 Kg N-P₂0₅- K₂0/ha was applied. Fertilizer P and K were applied at the final land preparation and N in three equal splits. In addition, 10 N treatment combinations, including three rates, three times of application and one control were tested in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with three replications. Harvesting date of the main crop: The experiment was conducted with BR17 to find out the effect of six harvesting dates of the main Boro crop on the performance of its successive ratoon crop in 1987 at Habiganj. The experiment design was a randomized complete block with three replications. Effect of cutting height of main crop on ratooning: One experiment was conducted with six cutting heights of the main crop (BRI7) from 5 to 30 cm with 5 cm interval (above the ground level).

Achievement/Findings:

The highest grain yield of 1.5 t/ha of the ratoon crop was obtained when 20 kg N / ha was applied at 15 days before harvest (DBH) of the main crop. Harvesting of the main crop at 3 - 7 days before physiological maturity (DBPM) reduced the main crop yield, but increased the yield of the ratoon crop. The optimum cutting height of the main crop ranged from 15 to 20 cm above the ground level.
