Evaluation of Four Groundnut Varieties on the Basis of Flowering Pattern and Dry Matter Partitioning

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, November 2006 to May 2007 to investigate flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency, growth and dry matter partitioning in four groundnut varieties viz., Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2, Binachinabadama-3 and Dhaka-1. Results revealed that Dhaka-l flowered and matured earlier than the other varieties. All the varieties followed a bimodal flowering pattern and Binachinabadam-2 produced the highest number of flowers plant^-1(l7l). In contrast, Binachinabadam-l produced the fewest flowers plant^-1 (132) had higher reproductive efficiency. High yielding varieties had shorter plant height, greater branch number and increased TDM plant^-1 but reverse results were observed in low yielding ones. Binachinabadam-2 produced the highest pod yield (23.02g plant^-1 and 3604 kg ha^-1 due to the production of bolder and higher number of pods plant-1. Dhaka-l produced the lowest pod yield although it had the highest number of pods plant^-1 due to production of smaller pods. Dry mass partitioning in to seed was significantly greater in Binachinabadam-l but total economic yield and its related traits were greater in Binachinabadam-2 because of total dry mass production and its greater allocation into root, stem, leaf, husk and seed weight plant^-1.

Objectives:

The objectives were to study the flowering pattern, reproductive efficiency, dry matter production and distribution to different parts of groundnut varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with four groundnut varieties viz., Binachinabadam-1, Binachinabadam-2, Binachinabadama-3 and Dhaka-1 at the field laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, November 2006 to May 2007. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 40, TSP 80, MP 60 and gypsum 40 kg ha^-1. Before flowering start (40 DAS), 10 plants from each replication of each variety were randomly selected. Flowers were counted daily from the date of commencement of flowering and continued up to 60 days after flowering start. To study ontogenetic growth characteristics and to know the optimum maturity, a total of five harvests were made and each harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 100 DAS and continued at an interval of 15 days up to 160 DAS. From each plot, five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for obtaining data of necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems, roots, matured and immature pods, and the corresponding dry weights were recorded after oven drying at 80^oC for 72 hours. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjudged with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the statistical computer package program, MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986).
