Two Viable Cropping Patterns for Yield Maximization of Deepwater Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

DW rice variety HYV and HYV Boro variety BR17 were sown in mid-November 1986 at two sites : Habiganj and Gazipur. Boro-TP DW rice pattern produced the . highest yield with increase of 28% and 19% over Bora alone at Gazipur and Habiganj, respectively. The combination of Boro and DW rice at 2:1 and 3:1 resulted in similar but significant yield increase (15% and 12%, respectively) as compared to Boro alone at Gazipur. The yield loss of HYV Boro due to intercropping with DW rice was compensated for by the main crop and ratoon crop yield of DW rice and thus increasing overall yield. At Habiganj, all ratoon produced yields similar to Boro alone. The main crop of Boro and DW rice flowered and matured simultaneously, making intercropping of HYV Boro with DW rice feasible and resulting in three harvests: main crop yield of Boro and DW rice in the Boro season and ratoon crop yield of DW rice in the DW rice season.

Objectives:

To study the feasibility of maximizing total production by transplanting DW rice following Boro harvest, and by intercropping of DW rice with HYV Boro followed by ratooned DW rice in the normal flood period.

Methodology:

DW rice variety HAIV and HYV Boro variety BR17 were sown in mid-November 1986 at two sites : Habiganj and Gazipur. Forty-day-old seedlings of Boro and DW rice were transplanted in rows at ratios of 1:1,2:1,3:1, and 4:1 in 4- x 3-m²plots with 30- x 10-cm spacing. The plots receiving transplanted DW rice (TP DW rice) following the Boro harvest were transplanted on the day after Boro harvest on 30 April with zero tillage. Four controls were established: (1) Boro alone, (2) DW . rice alone transplanted in Boro season and later on maintained as ratoon crop, (3) DW rice alone broadcast in DW rice season, and (4) DW rice alone transplanted in DW rice season after harvest of Boro rice. The experimental design was a randomized complete block (RCB) with three replications. Fertilizers were applied at a rate of 80- 60-40 kg, N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 for the Boro crop, with P and K as basal and N in 3 equal splits. Ratoon of DW rice and TP-DW rice received 20 kg N /ha on the next day after harvest of Boro, and at 7 DAT of DW rice, respectively. Weeding and insects control were done as necessary.

HYV Boro intercropped with DW rice followed by ratooned DW rice and HYV Boro followed by TP DW rice were the two viable cropping patterns for utilizing the lands kept fallow after harvest of Boro where 3-4 weeks flood free time is available between harvest of Boro and the advent of flood.
