Growth and Yield of Summer Mungbean Under Different Soil Moisture Levels

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was performed in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during March 2004 to May 2004 to assess effects of soil moisture levels on some mungbean varieties. Three soil moisture levels, 80, 60 and 40% FC and three mungbean varieties, BARI mung-5, Binamoog-2 and Binamoog-5 were included in the experiment. Plant height, number of primary and secondary branches per plant, number of leaves per plant, leaf area per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, 1000-seed weight, seed yield per plant¹, total dry matter per plant and harvest index (HI) were the highest in 80% FC and gradually decreased with gradual decrease in field capacity levels. The highest seed yield obtained in the 80% FC followed by 60% FC and 40% FC. Among the varieties, Binamoog-5 showed the best performance on almost all the parameters and it produced the highest seed yield under 80% FC and appeared to have some tolerance.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of soil moisture levels on growth and development of morpho-physiological traits including yield among the mungben varieties and to find out the effective soil moisture level for better production.

Methodology:

An experiment was performed in pots at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during March 2004 to May 2004. Three soil moisture levels, 80, 60 and 40% FC and three mungbean varieties, BARI mung-5, Binamoog-2 and Binamoog-5 were included in the experiment. The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH 6.8. Fertilizers were applied amounting of 0.05 g Urea, 0.16 g TSP and 0.10 g MP to each pot (6.5 kg soil) at the rate of 25, 70 and 35 kg per hectare of Urea, TSP and MP, respectively. Stress treatments were applied at 40 days after sowing (DAS) and continued up to maturity of the crop. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data on morphological, yield attributes and were recorded at 50, 60 DAS and at maturity. The collected data were analyzed with statistical program MSTAT-C. The mean differences were compared with Duncan’s Rand Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.
