Effect of Salinity Stress at Different Growth Stages of Lentil Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during November 2006 to February 2007 to investigate the effect of salinity at different growth stages on morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield of five lentil genotypes viz., BARImasur-4, N_lM-149, N5M-507, N₅M-573 and L -5. Salinity of 5 dSm^-1 was imposed at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stage of the lentil genotypes along with a control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Results revealed that the effect of salinity at different growth stages of lentil genotypes was significant on plant height, primary and secondary branches, root, leaf, stem and pod weight, total dry matter, number of pos and seeds per plant, 1000-seed weight and seed yield per plant. Salinity at pre-flowering stage showed the highest detrimental effect followed by salinity at flowering stage. The highest values of the above parameters were found in control plant followed by salinity at pod formation stage. Among the genotypes, BARlmasur-4 showed superior in most of the studied parameters followed by N₁'M-149. In contrast, the lowest values of most of the parameters were recorded in L-5.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the performance lentil genotypes under salinity imposed at different growth stages and to find out stress tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during November 2006 to February 2007 to investigate the effect of salinity at different growth stages on morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield of five lentil genotypes viz., BARImasur-4, N_lM-149, N5M-507, N₅M-573 and L -5. Salinity of 5 dSm^-1 was imposed at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stage of the lentil genotypes along with a control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 0.50, 1.55 and 1.35 g in each pot of 8 kg soils to maintain the dose of 40, 120 and 80 kg/ha of urea, TSP and MP, respectively. Salinity treatments were imposed according to the treatments by adding different amount of salts (NaCl 50%, NaS0₄ l5%, NaHC0₃ l0%, CaCl₂ l0%, MgCl₂ l0%, MgS0₄ 5%) (Burman et al., 2002) following Ponnamperuma (1984). Data on morpho-physiological and yield attributes were recorded at maturity. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program. Duncan’s Multiple Range Text (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.

Achievement/Findings:
