A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from October 2004 to January 2005 to study the effects of different salinity levels on three mustard genotypes viz., Safal, Binasarisaha-6 and MM2-6/98. The experiment was laid out following Randomized Complete Block Design where the salinity levels were control (0.43 dSm-1), 6, and 10 dSm-1. Plant height, number of branches, number of leaves and total dry matter plant-1 gradually decreased while Na+ and Ca++ content in leaves increased with the increase of salinity levels. The mustard variety Salal showed the highest plant height and the lowest K+ content in leaves under the salinity treatments. Binasarisha-6 showed the highest number of siliqua, seed yield per plant, harvest index, medium K+ content in leaves and the highest 1000-seed weight. The genotype MM2-6/98 showed the highest highest K+ content in leaves under the salinity levels. On the other hand, Mg++ content in leaves increased at 6 dSm-1 that decreased at 10 dSm-1. Among the varieties, Binasarisah-6 seemed to posses some tolerance; Safal was intermediate and the genotype MM2-6/98 showed less tolerance to salinity.

  Mustard

The objectives of the study were to assess mineral ion uptake and yield of mustard variety and to find out salt tolerant variety.

A pot experiment was conducted with three mustard genotypes viz., Binasarisha-5, Binasarisaha-6 and Safal in plastic pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during October 2004 to January 2005. The salinity levels were control (0.43 dSm-1) 4, 6, 8 and 10 dSm-1.  Soil of the experimental pot was collected from the BINA farm. Each pot contained 7.5 kg of soil. Dry soil was thoroughly mixed with cowdung and fertilizers before pot filling. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Urea, TSP, TSP, MP, zypsum and borax were applied at the rate of 1.57g, 0.50 g , 0.21, 1.05 and 0.08 g in each pot to maintain the doses of 25, 75, 30, 150 and 12 kg/ha of urea, TSP and MP, respectively. Total quantity of TSP and MP were added at the final pot preparation. Half of urea was applied 20 days after sowing (DAS), and another half was applied 32 DAS. Mustard seeds were sown in pots on 24 October 2002. Salinity treatments were imposed at 35 DAS by adding different amounts of salts (NaCI 50%, NaS04 l5%, NaHC03 l0%, CaCl2 l0%, MgCl2 l0%, MgS04 5%) (Burman et al., 2002) in the soils. Calculation for salinity development was done following Ponnamperuma (1984). Salinity of the pot soils was measured with Salinity Bridge and expressed as Electrical Conductivity (EC). Data on morpho-physiological attributes were recorded at 60 DAS and yield and yield attributes were also recorded at maturity. Na+, K+, Ca++ and Mg++ ion contents in leaves of the harvested plants were determined by Atomic absorption spectrophotometers directly. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program. Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.
