Integrated Nutrient Management for Sustainable Sugarcane Production in Different Agro-ecological Zones of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of integrated plant nutrition system (IPNS) on sugarcane yield and economic return at Ishurdi (High Ganges River Floodplain), Thakurgaon (Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain), Sreepur (Madhupur Tract) and Jaipurhat (Tista Meander Floodplain). The combined use of organic and inorganic fertiliser gave significantly higher sugarcane yield and economic benefit in all locations under study. Results revealed that average yield increase was 13.0 per cent higher for combined application of press mud! cowdung at 12.5 tonnes per hectare along with inorganic fertilisers over use of only inorganic fertilisers in case of both MYG and HYG. In situ incorporation of dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) as green manure increased sugarcane yield and contributed about 42-46 kg N per hectare in soil.

Objectives:

To study the productivity and profitability of different fertiliser management options for sustainable sugarcane production.
To evaluate the soil fertility required for sugarcane cultivation by using organic and inorganic fertilisers.

Methodology:

Four field experiments were conducted in three cropping seasons at Ishurdi under High Ganges River Floodplain, Thakurgaon under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain, Sreepur under Madhupur Tract and Jaipurhat under Tista Meander Floodplain soils of Bangladesh. Experiments were laid out in randomised complete block design with four replications at Thakurgaon, Sreepur and Jaipurhat. At Ishurdi each treatment was replicated thrice. The treatment wise different rates of organic and inorganic fertilisers of different locations. The unit plot size was 8 x 6 m. Two budded soil bed settlings of Misrimala (local) were used as test material at Sreepur site. Thirty-five days-aged polybag settlings of variety Isd 29 were used as seed material at Ishurdi and Jaipurhat, and at Thakurgaon the variety Isd 28 was used. All the recommended cultural managemeHent practices were followed as and when required. N as urea and K as muriate of potash were applied in three equal splits, first at 20-30 days after transplanting, second at peak tillering stage and finally after one month of second top dressing. Full amount of triple super phosphate, gypsum, zinc sulphate, magnesium oxide and organic manures were applied in the trenches and mixed thoroughly with soil by spade. Cowdung was used only at Sreepur site. Dhaincha as green manure were raised and incorporated in situ after 50 ± 5 days of seed sowing. The N, P and K contents of organic manures and dhaincha are given in Table 2. Necessary data were recorded and analysed using the Least Significant Difference Test (LSD) at P=0.05. Cost and return analysis of different treatments were calculated on the basis of prevailing market prices during the study period. Sugarcane crop was harvested 13 months after planting. Initial and post harvest soils at the depth of 0-15 em were collected and analysed following standard procedure.

Thus, it can be concluded that the use of 12.5 tonnes per hectare press mud along with inorganic fertilisers as per soil test basis for HYG would maximise sugarcane production and higher returns in all the study areas of Ishurdi, Thakurgaon, Sreepur and J aipurhat in Bangladesh. In situ green manure incor- poration would increase sugarcane yield and supplement about 42 - 46 kg N per hectare in the subsequent sugarcane crop as well. Any application of press mud/cowdung at 12.5 tonnes per hectare or mustard oil cake at 500 kg per hectare or in situ green manure incorporation combined with inorganic fertilisers (as per soil test basis for high yield goal) would ensure sustainable sugarcane yield and soil fertility in that study locations.
