Site Specific Fertilizer Requirement of Sugarcane and Intercrop (onion) Under Sugarcane Based Cropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted intercropping sugarcane with onion at Rajshahi under High Ganges River Floodplain and Thakurgaon under Old Himalayan Piedmont plain of Bangladesh to determine the site-specific nutrient requirements of cane and intercrop, onion, and their economics under sugarcane based cropping system. Cane yield was enhanced when it was intercropped with onion because of the residual effect of fertiliser applied to the onion. Gross return and gross margin were greater in cane intercropped with onion over sole crop. The treatment T₅ that received fertilisers for sugarcane (N₁₅₀P₅₂K₉₀S₃₅Zn₃ and N₁₄₀P₃₇K₁₀₀S₂₅Zn₂ kg/ha) and onion (N₅₂P₂₁K₅₀S₁₅ and N₅₀P₂₀K₅₀S1₅ kg/ha) as per Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute Recommendation' 1998 at Rajshahi and Thakurgaon site, respectively showed higher gross margin and benefit cost ratio at both the locations under study.

Objectives:

To find out the site specific nutrient requirement of sugarcane and onion

To observe the potential of growing onion as cash crop in supplementing extra income to cane growers.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted in three cropping seasons at Rajshahi under High Ganges River Floodplain and Thakurgaon under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain soils of Bangladesh intercropping sugarcane with onion. The experiment was laid out in a randomised complete block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 8 m x 6 m. The varieties of sugarcane were Isd 20 and Isd 28 at Rajshahi and Thakurgaon, respectively. The variety of onion planted was Taherpuri. All the recommended cultural management practices were followed when required. Full amount of triple super phosphate (TSP), gypsum, zinc sulphate, one third of urea and muriate of potash (MP) were applied as basal application in the trenches and mixed with soil. The remaining urea and MP were top dressed in two equal splits at 120 and 180 days after planting. For onion, half of urea and MP, full amounts ofTSP and gypsum were applied as basal doses. The remaining half of urea and MP were top-dressed 45 days after planting. Sunhemp as green manure was raised and incorporated in situ after 40±5 days of seed sowing. Sugarcane crop was harvested 13 months after planting. The treatments were as follows: T₁ - Recommended fertiliser dose for sole sugarcane following FRG'97 for MYG. T₂ - Fertiliser dose for sole sugarcane based on soil test value for HYG. T₃ - Fertiliser dose for sole cane as per BSRI recommendation' 98 for HYG. T₄ - Fertiliser dose for sugarcane + onion following FRG'97 for MYG. T₅ - Fertiliser dose for sugarcane + onion following BSRI recommendation' 98 for HYG. T₅ - Fertiliser dose for sugarcane + onion following BSRI recommendation' 98 for HYG + Sunhemp.

It may be concluded that intercropping onion with sugarcane using BSRI'98 rates of fertilisers for both the crops gave higher gross margin and benefit cost ratio for cane and onion at Rajshahi under High Ganges River Flood Plain and Thakurgaon under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain soils of Bangladesh.
