Efficacies of Some Organic Fertilizers on Sustainable Sugarcane Production in Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain Soil of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacies of some organic fertilizers on yield and quality of sugarcane in a sandy acidic soil of Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain of Bangladesh. Five treatments viz., T₁: Control (No fertilizer), T₂: Recommended fertilizer dose (N₁₂₀P₃₅K₁₀₀S₂₅M_g20Zn₂ kg ha^-1), T₃: Northern balanced fertilizer (BF) @ 750 kg ha^-1+ Recommended urea, T⁴: Northern compost fertilizer (CF) @ 1250 kg ha^-1+ Recommended fertilizer dose and T₅: Northern organic fertilizer (OF) @ 750 kg ha^-1 + Recommended fertilizer dose were applied. Results revealed that the treatment T₃ significantly increased the number of tillers (172.4 X 10³ ha^-1), millable cane (101.8 x 10³ ha^-1), stalk height (3.1m) and girth (2.1 cm) which ultimately resulted in highest cane yield (70.88 t ha^-1). It was 143.6 % higher yield over control. It is concluded that organic Balanced Fertilizer @750 kg ha^-1 with only recommended urea is superior for sustainable production of sugarcane and sugar.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacies of some organic fertilizers on yield and quality of sugarcane grown under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain soil of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The investigation was conducted during 2002-03 crop season at Patuadangi farrn,Regional Sugarcane Research Station, Thakurgaon under Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain soil to find out an economically suitable organically made fertilizer for obtaining high sugarcane and sugar yield. It was laid out in RCBDwith four replications. Five treatments were comprised including three organically made fertilizers supplied by Northern Agro-Services Ltd., Bangladesh and applied in the study. T₁: Control (No fertilizer), T₂: Recommended fertilizer dose (N₁₂₀P₃₅K₁₀₀S₂₅M_g20Zn₂ kg ha^-1, T₃: Northern balanced Fertilizet (BF) @750 kg ha^-1 + Recommended urea, T₄: Northern compost Fertilizer (CF) @ 1250 kg ha^-1+ Recommended fertilizer dose, T₅: Northern organic Fertilizer (OF) @ 750 kg ha^-1 + Recommended fertilizer dose. The rates of the fertilizers were selected based on the literature supplied with the products. The unit plot size was 8 x 10 m^-2. The test variety of sugarcane was Isd 31. A thirty-five days aged of two eyed settlings raised in soil bed were used in the study. The method of planting was spaced transplanting soil bed of two eyed settlings. The date of transplantation in the main field was January 2003 and harvested on January 2004 after full maturity of the crop. Urea, Triple superphospahte (TSP), Muriate of potash (MOP), gypsum and zinc sulphate were used as the source of N, P, K, Sand Zn, respectively. One third of K and one third of N was also applied as basal. The rest amount of Nand K were applied in two splits at 90 and 150 days after transplanting as top dressing. Initial soil status was presented. Recorded data on the number of tiller at 150 days after transplantation (DAT), mill able cane at harvest, yield of cane, stalk height and girth, and per centbrix in cane have been presented and the yield increase (%) over control is shown. The data obtained were statistically analyzed by using analysis of variance and finally least significant difference (LSD) test at P=0.05%.

Achievement/Findings:

It is concluded that the treatment T³ having organic balanced fertilizer @750 kg ha^-1 with only recommended urea significantly produced higher sugar and sugarcane yield along with all other yield contributing parameters among all the treatments, except T₄ that received compost fertilizer @ 1250 kg ha^-1 with all recommended fertilizer dose. Thus, the treatment T₃ is found superior to ensure sustained production of sugar and sugarcane in the study area of Bangladesh.
