Important Indices on Plant Sugarcane and Ratoon in Relation to Sugar Accumulation and Maturity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

We studied the character interrelationships in soils and foliar tissues moisture, nutrient status of leaves and juice parameters of plant sugarcane and ratoon crops at maturity phase. Both. plant and ratoon crops responded significantly in terms of moisture, nutrient 'content and juice quality as age advanced. Commercial cane sugar (CCS) showed significant positive correlation with brix, pol and purity and negatively correlated with reducing sugar, soil moisture, leaf sheath moisture, leaf blade nitrogen and leaf sheath potassium. Reducing sugar had positive association with soil moisture, leaf sheath moisture leaf blade nitrogen and leaf sheath potassium. The association pattern between the characters for plant as well as ratoon cane was similar. At the same time results indicated that as plant and ratoon crops were examined at one month interval regularly had a little influence on the use of tissues moisture leaf nitrogen and reducing sugar content to maturity in relation to sugar accumulation.

Objectives:

To elucidate the relationship between important indices on sugarcane and ratoon crops in order to sugar accumulation at different months of maturity phase.

Methodology:

A field study on plant and ratoon crops was carried out from Agronomy and Soils experimental plot of Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm during winter' 2001 to summer' 2002. The climate of the location is tropical and sub-tropical. A sample collected from plant crop was planted in December 2000. After harvesting plant cane on November 2000 the ratoon crop was established on the same layout on 2001. A randomized complete block design was used with three replications. Forty five days aged one-eyed sugarcane settings raised in polythene bag were transplanted in the plots. The sugarcane variety Isd 24 and Isd 29 were used as test crop that was released by BSRl in 1993 and 1998, respectively. Each plot had an area of 7m x 6 m in which 6 rows of cane were planted at an interrow spacing of 1 m and 0.45 m interplant spacing. Surface soil (0-10 cm) was collected from the experimental plots. The processed soils (less than 2 mm) were analyzed for some characteristics using standard methods. The following parameters were recorded from the extracted juice: Brix: It was measured with the help of Brix hydrometer and standard ized at 20°C. Pol: Juice was purified by adding (1 gm/100 ml of juice) lead sub acetate in the flask, juice was poured over Wattman's filter paper over funnel. The filtered juice was poured in pol tube which was fitted inside the polarimeter (ADP-220) and pol reading was recorded. Purity: The per cent purity was calculated from the dividing of pol per cent by corrected brix and multiplied by 100. Reducing sugar percentage (R.S.%): R.S. percentage was determined in the extract juice following Queensland Laboratory Manual (Anonymous, 1970). Fibre per cent = Fibre in cane was determined by method prescribed in Queensland Laboratory Manual (Anonymous, 1970). From the data, pol (%), brix (%) and fibre values were used for the estimation of commercial cane sugar per cent (C.C.S.). Test of significance: Data on different parameters of plant and ratoon cane were subjected to statistical analysis, and the treatment means were compared using LSD at 5% level of significance. The simple correlation coefficients were computed considering the pooled data for each pair of characters in all possible combinations following the MSTAT computer package.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated that as plant and ratoon crops were examined at one month interval regularly had a little influence on the use of tissues moisture leaf nitrogen and reducing sugar content to maturity in relation to sugar accumulation. As crops (plant and ratoon) were analyzed at regular intervals the effect of age had a little influence on the use of tissue moisture and reducing sugar per cent for monitoring maturity.
