Field experiments were conducted in the High Ganges River Floodplain soils of Bangladesh to investigate the effect of press mud and inorganic nitrogen on the soil fertility and yield of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.). Experiments, conducted in two consecutive crop seasons, comprised of eight treatment combinations viz. two levels of press mud (10 and 20 t ha-1), three levels of N (120, 160 and 200 kg ha-1), one recommended doses of N, p. K. Sand Zn fertilizers and a control (no fertilizer). The results indicated that application of press mud @ 20 t ha-1 accompanying 200 kg N ha-1 significantly increased tillers (200.6 x 103 ha-1), millable cane stalks (100.9 x 103 ha-1), cane Yield (86.7 t ha-1) and sugar yield (8.36 t ha-1) over the control. Furthermore, application of press mud alone increased the cane yield by 20-30% compared to the plot receiving no press mud. The uptake of N P K and S by the crop was lower than the added press mud and inorganic fertilizers in the study, which leads to increase the soil reserves. Economics, of fertilizer use indicated that maximum marginal rate of return (MRR) was obtained from the plot receiving 10 t ha-1 of press mud and 200 kg N ha' with mean cane yield of 81.47t ha-1.

To study effects of press mud along with inorganic nitrogen on soil fertility, growth and yield of sugarcane in High Ganges River Floodplain Soils of Bangladesh.

The field experiments were conducted in two consecutive cropping seasons of 1996-97 and 1997-98 in BSRI farm at Ishurdi under High Ganges River Floodplain soils of Bangladesh (Typic-Eutrocrept). The treatments comprised control To:(no fertilizer applicatlonj.T1: recommended dose of N160, (P2O5)110,  (K2O)110, S40 and Zn10 kg ha-1. T2: nitrogen @ 120 kg ha-1 + press mud @ 10 t ha-1, T3: nitrogen @ 160 kg ha-1 + press mud @ 10 t ha-1, T4: nitrogen @200 kg ha-1 + press mud @ 10 t na-1. T5 : nitrogen @ 120 kg ha-1 + press mud @ 20 t ha-1, T6: nitrogen @ 160 kg ha-1 + press mud @ 20 t ha-1 and T7: nitrogen @ 200 kg ha-1 + press mud @ 20 t ha-1. Top soils were collected from a non-fertilized plot up to 20 cm depth. After collection the soil was air-dried and sieved (<2mm) and was analyzed for its major characteristics. The experimental soil was sandy loam in texture and had pH (1:2.5) 7.6; total N 0.06 %; Organic matter 0.85 %, K 0.21 meq/100 g soil. The P, S and Zn contents were 11,17.0 and 0.34 μg-1, respectively. Experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. In this study 30 days old sugarcane settlings of variety Isd 20 (previously raised in polyethylene bag) were transplanted in December each year and the crop was harvested at the age of 13 months. The unit plot size of the experiment was 6m x 6m. Essential agronomic and crop-saving practices like disease and insect control were followed when required. The experimental plot was thus kept as far as possible homogenous in both the years. Nitrogen fertilizer as urea were applied in two splits: first at the establishment stage of settlings (21 d), second at the tiller completion stage (150 d) after transplanting. Triple super phosphate, Muriate of potash, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate were applied at the time of transplantation to supply P2O5, K2O, S and Zn @110, 110,40 and 10 kg ha-1, respectively. Press mud of 43 % moisture was broadcast and mixed thoroughly in the trenches by spading before settlings transplantation. The used press mud contains 1.3% N, 0.34% P, 0.90 % K and 0.55 % S .The initial and final soil available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur status was determined following standard procedures. Yield data and quality character was recorded at harvest. The soil and press mud moisture content was determined by using the formula: [(Loss in weight of soil / press mud on drying) x 100] / [(Oven dry weight of soil / press mud)]. Total dry matter yield (leaf +cane stalk) was recorded at the time of harvest and oven dried at 65 ± 5°C to calculate the uptake values of N, P, K and S by using standard procedures. Data were subjected to statistical .analysls and the significance of mean difference was carried out following the Least Significant Differences Test (LSD) at 5% level of significant.

Therefore, it is inferred that application of T4 treatment (160 kg N coupled with 20 tons press mud ha-1) would be economically benefited for sustaining productivity of sugarcane yield by arresting nutrient depletion and thus maintaining fertility status of the soils under High Ganges River Floodplain Soils of Bangladesh.
