Uptake of 35s by Different Genotypes of Sunflower

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eight genotypes of sunflower viz., SFI-2, SFI-18, SFI-56, SFA-1, SFA-2, SFA-3, SFA-4 and Kironi were used in this study to find out genotypic variation in sulphur uptake capacity of sunflower. It was observed that there were three distinct groups of sunflower genotypes according to their 35S uptake capacity like high, medium and low. High S uptake capacity genotypes (SFI-56, SFI-2 and SFA-1) produced higher seed yield than medium and low S uptake genotypes. In contrast, lower yielded genotypes (SFA-3 and SFI-18) had the lowest S uptake capacity. Correlation between S uptake and seed yield of sunflower genotypes were found to be highly positive (r = 0.83**).

Objectives:

To find out genotypic variation in sulphur uptake capacity of sunflower.

Methodology:

Eight genotypes of sunflower viz., SFI-2, SFI-18, SFI-56, SFA-1, SFA-2, SFA-3, SFA-4 and Kironi were used in this study. Plants were grown at BINA farm, Mymensingh during Kharif-I season of 1999. Recommended fertilizers were applied. Forty day old plants were taken from the field for ³⁵S study. For this, plants were taken carefully from the field with soil block so that roots were not damaged. The roots were washed in running water in order to remove soil. Then the plants were replaced by inserting the roots through holes in a hard board placed on PVC pots containing 5L of 0.1 strength nutrient solution along with 30 uCi ³⁵S. After six hours of the experimental chase period, plants were taken from the solution. Roots were separated from the shoot immediately after collection of the plants from nutrient solution. Then 35 S was determined in root, shoot of the plant according to standard technique. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Sulphur uptake capacity may be utilized in the breeding programme for screening superior lines of sunflower for higher nitrogen assimilation with more yield and better nutritional quality of grains.
