Effect of Seasonal Seeds on the Growth and Yield of Tomato Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during November 2006 to March 2007 to study the effects of seasonal seeds on the growth and yield performance of tomato genotypes. The experiment comprised tomato seeds collected from two seasons viz., winter (October-March) and summer (February-June) and three tomato genotypes viz., CLN-2026, CLN-2413 and CLN-2443. The experiment was designed in a two factor randomized complete block design with three replications. Results indicated that irrespective of genotypes winter seeds showed better results compared to summer seeds in most of the plant characters like seed germination, plant height, total dry mass, number of branch and effective flower cluster plant^-1, reproductive efficiency, number of fruits cluster^-1 and fruits plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, single fruit weight and fruit yield. Genotype CLN-2413 showed the best performance regarding growth and yield parameters.

Objectives:

To know the effect of seasonal seeds on growth and yield of tomato genotypes

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during November 2006 to March 2007. The seeds were collected from both in winter (October 2005-March 2006) and summer (February-June 2006) seasons from three elite genotypes of tomato viz., CLN-2026, CLN-2413 and CLN-2443 developed at Crop Physiology Division of BINA. The experiment consists of two factors viz., seeds of winter and summer seasons and three tomato genotypes. The experiment was designed in a two factor randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3 m × 2 m with the spacing of 50 cm × 50 cm. The seeds were sown in seedbed on 29 October 2006 and 27-day old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental field. Manure and fertilizers were applied as per fertilizer recommendation guide. Irrigation, weeding, pruning, stalking, pesticides spray and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. Ten plants from each plot were selected randomly for data recording on morpho-physiological, reproductive, yield and yield related traits. Fruit yield was collected from each plot and converted into tons per hectare. Harvesting was done at different dates depending on fruit ripening. The collected data were analyzed statistically using the computer package programme, MSTAT-C and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range.

Achievement/Findings:

Temperature greatly affects the quality of tomato seed production. Winter tomato plants produced good quality seeds, while summer tomato plants produced poor quality seeds. So, seed production in winter season is suitable for large scale tomato cultivation, not for summer.
