Effect of Seed Rate and Fertilizers on Yield of Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of seed rate and fertilizers on yield attributes and yield of summer mungbean cv. BINAmung-7. The experiment comprised of three seed rates viz. 20, 25 and 30 kg ha^-1, and three fertilizers viz., i) Control (No fertilizer), ii) Biofertilizer with recommended doses of TSP and MP and iii) Recommended doses of urea, TSP and MP . The plant height and harvest index increased with increasing seed rate while the number of branch, pods plant^-1, seeds pod^-1, and seed weight plant^-1 decreased with increasing seed rate. The highest seed yield plant^-1 was recorded at the seed rate of 20 kg ha^-1and the lowest was observed at the seed rate of 30 kg ha^-1. But per hectare basis, the highest seed yield was recorded in 30 kg ha^-1 due to higher number of plants per unit area. Among the fertilizers, application of biofertilizers with TSP and MP showed superiority in relation to plant growth and yield attributes resulting the highest seed yield both per plant and per hectare. For treatment combination, seeds at the rate of 30 kg ha^-1and biofertilizer with TSP and MP produced maximum seed yield.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of seed rate and different fertilizers on crop characters, yield attributes and yield of mungbean cv. BINAmung-7.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from March to June 2008 to investigate the effect of seed rate and different fertilizers on crop characters, yield attributes and yield of mungbean cv. BINAmung-7. The experiment comprised of three seed rates viz. 20, 25 and 30 kg ha^-1, and three fertilizers viz., control (No fertilizer was used, T₀), Biofertilizer with recommended doses of TSP and MP (T₁) and recommended doses of urea, TSP and MP (T₂). The experiment was laid out in two factors randomized complete block design with three replications where seed rate placed in the main plot and fertilizer placed in sub-plot. Unit plot size was 2 m x 2.5 m. Data on plant characters were recorded from the five plants of each replication except seed and straw yield. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Seed rate of 30 kg ha^-1 and application of biofertilizer with TSP and MP appears to be the best among the treatments regarding yield of BINAmung-7 under the AEZ-9, which can be practiced in this area for better benefits.
