Salinity Priming Effects of Seeds and Seedlings on Growth and Yield Parameters of Summer Tomato Under Different Saline Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from November, 2001 to February 2002 to observe the effect of different priming treatments on growth and yield parameters of Binatomato-3 under two different soil salinity conditions. The treatment of soil considered, (non saline soil or 0.7 dS m^-1) and 8.5 dS m^-1. Different priming treatments were considered control, seed priming, seedling priming and both seed and seedling priming with 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4% NaCl solution. Plant height, leaf number, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total dry weight (TDM), leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate, relative growth rate, number of flowers, fruit weight and fresh fruit weight (yield) were found to reduce under salinity concentration than control. Seed priming, seedling priming, both seed and seedling priming with different salinity concentration showed the different response in both non-saline and 0.5% saline soil. The positive effect of priming treatments was in the order of seed priming, seedling priming and both seed and seedling priming respectively. But the control plants under 0.5% saline soil showed much susceptibility than other priming treatments. Among all the priming treatments seed priming with 0.1% NaCl solution showed better performance.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to induce the salt tolerance ability of Binatomato-3 by treating seed or seedling or both seeds and seedlings with different concentrations of NaCl solution at normal and saline soil and to determine the optimum dose of salinity priming and their growth, development and yield performance of tomato.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from November, 2001 to February 2002 to observe the effect of different priming treatments on growth and yield parameters of Binatomato-3 under two different soil salinity conditions. The treatment of soil considered, (non saline soil or 0.7 dS m^-1) and 8.5 dS m^-1. Different priming treatments were considered control, seed priming, seedling priming and both seed and seedling priming with 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4% NaCl solution. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 1.066, 0.933 and 0.666 g in each pot of 8 kg soils to maintain the dose of 400, 350 and 250 kg/ha of urea, TSP and MP, respectively. Salinity treatments were imposed by adding NaCl salt. Leaf area index, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate were computed by using formulae of Radford (1978). Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program. Duncan’s Multiple Range Text (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.
