Morphological and Biochemical Characterization of Radiation Induced (100gy) Aman Rice Mutants of Ukunmodhu Cultivar

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture farm, Mymensingh, during July to December 2004 to investigate the morphological and biochemical characteristics of aromatic fine rice viz., Ukunmodhu and its mutants. The experiment was carried out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Molphological, physiological and biochemical characters were measured at panicle initiation, after l0 days of panicle initiation and at maturity stage. The mutant line RM-l00/24 had the highest grain yield hill^-1, panicle length, TDM hill^-1, grain yield hill^-1 and harvest index. Mutant RM-100/11 produced the shorter plant height and RM-l00/l produced the highest number of effective tillers. Crop duration of mutant line RM-l00/16 was lesser but the grain yield hill^-1 and harvest index were lower than that of the mother plant. The results suggested that mutant line RM-l00/24 with higher grain yield possessed higher total dry matter (TDM) hill^-1and harvest index (HI). This mutant line also had higher soluble protein and total sugar content. However, the results suggested that mutants RM-l00/24 and RM-l00/16 might be suitable for its profitable cultivation in the country. Further experimentation under different agro-ecological zones is required for a valid conclusion.

Objectives:

The objectives were to study morphological and biochemical characters in relation to yield potential of some of the mutants derived from Ukunmodhu through gama irradiation, to find out earliness, yield potential and variation in characters in the mutants and to select such mutant that might be suitable for release as a variety.

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture farm, Mymensingh, during July to December 2004 to investigate the morphological and biochemical characteristics of aromatic fine rice viz., Ukunmodhu and its mutants. The experiment was carried out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Molphological, physiological and biochemical characters were measured at panicle initiation, after l0 days of panicle initiation and at maturity stage. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental plots at the rate of 150, 95, 70 and 60 kg ha^-1 in the form of urea, muriate of potash triple super phosphate and gypsum, respectively. On 2 August 2004, 40 days old seedlings were transplanted in the puddle land with plant to plant distance 30 cm and row to row distance 30 cm. Three seedlings were transplanted in each pot. Data on yield and yield attributes were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Freed, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
