Effects of Iaa on Growth and Yield of Transplanted Aman Rice Under Irrigated and Moistures Stress Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclea Agriculture, Mymensingh during August to December 2004, to study the effect of IAA on growth and yield contributing characters of aman rice var. Binadhan-4 under irrigated and moisture stress conditions. The experiment comprised of (a) five levels of IAA viz., 0 , 25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm and (b) three levels of irrigation viz., i) continuous irrigation, ii) moisture stress at booting stage for seven days and iii) moisture stress at flowering stage for seven days. IAA was applied two times at maximum tillering stage in ten days interval. Continuously irrigated rice gave the highest values in morphological, yield attributes and yield compared to moisture stressed plants at booting and flowering stage. Application of 100 ppm IAA showed the best performance under continuously irrigated condition to the stressed plants. The highest grain yield of Binadhan-4 was recorded with 100 ppm IAA in continuously irrigated condition and the lowest grain yield was recorded in the untreated control plants along with moisture stress at flowering stage. The application of 100 ppm IAA resulted in early grain maturity for one week compared to the untreated plants in Binadhan-4.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to study the effects of IAA on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield of Binadhan-4 under normal and moisture stress conditions at booting and flowering stages.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out at the experimental site of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during August to December 2004, to study the effect of IAA on growth and yield contributing characters of aman rice var. Binadhan-4 under irrigated and moisture stress conditions. The experiment comprised of (a) five levels of IAA viz., 0 , 25, 50, 75 and 100 ppm and (b) three levels of irrigation viz., i) continuous irrigation, ii) moisture stress at booting stage for seven days and iii) moisture stress at flowering stage for seven days. IAA was applied two times at maximum tillering stage in ten days interval. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental pots at the rate of 150, 95, 70 and 60 kg ha^-1 in the form of urea, muriate of potash triple super phosphate and gypsum, respectively. On 8 August 2004, 34 days old seedlings were transplanted in the puddle pots. Three seedlings were transplanted in each pot. Data on morphological, growth and yield contributing characters were record. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Freed, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The application of different levels of IAA showed significant effect on morphological, growth and yield contributing characters. IAA significantly influenced the plant height, tillers/hill, flag leaf area, flag leaf length, flag leaf dry weight, effective tillers/hill, panicle length, number of filled grain/panicle, 1000-grain weight, total grain yield/hill, harvest index and reduced unfilled grain/panicle and crop duration. Application of 100 ppm IAA showed the best performance under continuously irrigated condition to the stressed plants. The highest grain yield of Binadhan-4 was recorded with 100 ppm IAA in continuously irrigated condition and the lowest grain yield was recorded in the untreated control plants along with moisture stress at flowering stage. The application of 100 ppm IAA resulted in early grain maturity for one week compared to the untreated plants in Binadhan-4.
