Effect of Ga3 on Yield and Yield Attributes of Mustard Var. BINAsarisha-3

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture Substation at Rangpur, during October 2004 to February 2005, to evaluate the effects of Gibberellic acid (GA₃) on yield and yield attributes of mustard var. Binasarisha-3. Six concentrations viz., 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ppm of GA₃ were applied through spraying at the flowering stage. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Results of the experiment revealed that GA₃ at 60 ppm had significantly increased the number of total siliqua/plant, number of fertile siliqua/plant, number of seeds/siliqua, shoot and root dry weights/plant, seed yield and harvest index, while the number of unfertile siliqua/plant and plant height increased significantly with the application of 100 ppm GA₃. The highest total dry matter was recorded with 80 ppm GA₃ but it was identical to those produced by 60 and 100 ppm. It was observed that the use of 40-80 ppm GA₃ did not have any significant yield increase, rather the use of higher amount of GA₃ (80-100 ppm) had resulted in decreased yields. On the other hand, the highest seed yield/hectare was recorded with the application of 60 ppm GA₃.

Objectives:

The objective of the study was to provide important information on the effect of Gibberellic acid (GA₃) on the growth and yield of mustard var. Binasarisha-3 in field condition.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture Substation at Rangpur, during October 2004 to February 2005. Six concentrations viz., 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ppm of Gibberellic acid (GA₃) were applied on mustard var. Binasarisha-3 through spraying at the flowering stage. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. The size of unit plot was 1.5 m × 1 m. The blocks were 1 m apart and the distance between sub-blocks and unit plot was 0.7 m and 0.5m, respectively. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental plots at the rate of 250, 180, 70, 140, 5 and 12 kg ha^-1 in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc oxide and borax, respectively. Mustard seeds were sown in plot on 11 October 2004. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Freed, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
