Optimizing Seed Rate of Recently Released Mungbean Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from the period of March to May 2011 to investigate the effect of cultivars and seed rate on morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield of summer mungbean. The experiment comprised three varieties viz., BINAmung-6, BINAmung-7 and BINAmung-8 and three seed rates viz., 30, 40 and 50 kg ha^-1. Branch number plant^-1, leaf area plant^-1, total dry mass plant^-1, relative growth rate, pod number plant^-1, seed and biological yield plant^-1 and harvest index decreased with increasing seed rate while reverse trend was observed in plant height and leaf area index. Results revealed that optimum seed rate of a mungbean variety depends on seed size. The variety having smaller size seeds require lower seed rate and vice versa. On an average over the varieties, the seed rate 40 kg ha^-1 showed the highest seed yield in mungbean. The optimum seed rate for maximizing seed yield of BINAmung-6 was 50 kg ha^-1. Similarly, the optimum seed rate for BINAmung-7 and BINAmung-8 was 30 and 40 kg ha^-1, respectively. The dry matter partitioning to economic yield was also higher at above optimum seed rates of the varieties.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum seed rate for getting higher seed yield of recently released three mungbean varieties in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during the period from March to May 2011. Three recently released mungbean varieties namely BINAmung-6, BINAmung-7 and BINAmung-8 were used in the experiment. Seeds were sown at the rate of 30, 40 and 50 kg ha^-1. The experiment was laid out in two factor randomized complete block design with three replications. The line to line distance was 30 cm. The unit plot size was 2.5 cm × 3.0 m. The fertilizers were applied during the final land preparation at the rate of 40, 80 and 60 kg ha^-1 of urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Different intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning, irrigation and pesticide spray were done as and when necessary. To growth study, two harvests were made at 35 and 50 days after sowing (DAS). From each sampling, a unit area of 0.3 m² in two adjacent rows of 0.5 m (10 plants) were randomly selected from each plot and uprooted for collecting necessary parameters. The plants were separated into roots, stems, leaves and pods, and the corresponding dry weight were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2 ⁰C for 72 hours. The growth analyses like crop growth rate (CGR) and relative growth rate (RGR) was carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). The leaf area of each sample was measured by automatic leaf area meter at 55 DAS. Chlorophyll was determined at 45 DAS. Leaf photosynthesis was measured by Photosynthesis meter. The yield contributing characters were recorded at harvest from ten competitive plants of each plot. The seed yield was recorded from five rows of each plot (1.50 m × 3.0 m) and converted into seed weight hectare^-1. The collected data were analyzed statistically.
