Effect of Sowing Dates and Seed Rates on Productivity and Profitability of Summer Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment was carried out in summer season of 2009 and 2010 at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh to evaluate the effect sowing dates and seed rates on productivity, profitability and nutrient uptake of summer mungbean. Experimental results revealed that 5^th March sown crop recorded significantly higher growth attributes, yield and economics than 05 April sown crop. This was mainly because of the fact that almost all the yield attributing characters were favourably influenced due to early sowing and resulted yield increased. The higher yield and economics were found with seed rates of 35 kg ha^-1 whereas, CEC of roots, root N content and nitrogenous activity (NA) were higher at 20 kg ha^-1. Application of 50% RDF (recommended dose of fertilizer +50% RDN (recommended dose of nitrogen as vermicompost) + PSB (phosphate solubilizing bacteria) produced significantly higher growth attributes, yield and economics of mungbean.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of sowing dates, seed rates and integrated nutrient management on productivity, profitability and nutrient uptake of summer mungbean under Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during summer season of 2009 and 2010. The experiment was conducted in split-plot plot design with three replications. The two sowing dates (5 March and April 5) were kept in main plots and four seed rates (20, 25, 30 and 35 kg ha^-1) were allotted in sub-plots. The nutrient dose of N and P were applied through DAP (18% N and 46% P) and urea (46% N), respectively as basal. However, 50% RDN through vermicompost @ 2.66 t ha^-1(20 kg N ha^-1 ) was applied as per treatment on the basis of N content. The mungbean var. ‘Binamung-5’ was sown in line at a row spacing of 30 cm ×10 cm. The plot size was 4.0 m x 3.0 m. Different growth characters like plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, shoot and root dry weight, total nodules, effective nodules, and leaf area index were recorded at harvest. Seed and straw were dried processed and analyzed for N, P and K content for working out nutrient uptake for 2010. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The study suggests summer mungbean cv. Binamung-5 sown on 5^th March with seed rate of 35 kg/ha along with combined application of inorganic fertilizer, 50% N through vermicompost and biofertilizers is beneficial in terms of crop productivity, profitability as well as soil health under AEZ-9.
